March 21, 2017 at 12:37 am #1068478JuddParticipantThe results of the Guess Your Final Score are in. Congratulations to Bobco who guessed his final score EXACTLY! It appears that his complicated math formula in this thread was a winner, in addition to going out for a 12 mile ride yesterday after having ridden 84 miles for the VASA ride.
Lots of people came very close to guessing their final score. And lots of people blew their guess out of the water. The final tally is below. Holler at me if I missed your guess on the thread and I’ll update it.

Steve O – 1,000,000 – 2,243 – 997,757So, my goal for Freezing Saddles this year was 1,500 miles… Thanks to some pretty tough competition with Team 15, I crushed that and got 2,200 miles! So, I am kind of happy that I did not win this prize. 😎

Yeah – I think I totally underestimated my pseudo-competitiveness heading into this competition, so I’m thrilled I was so far off. I had a goal/target of 70 days and 300 miles (the 1,000 points for Chris M), which would’ve been a modest but not crazy increase over what I had been averaging since July when I started using Strava. Little did I know that this competition would inspire me to come up with schemes like meeting my wife and daughter in Reston for lunch (me biking from DC, them driving). Now, to keep that effort up without the underlying “but it’s for the team” excuse…

If I did my usual bike routine of just mountain biking, I probably would not have surpassed this. But thanks to the harsh browbeating by self-selected team captain Rod Smith*, I quadrupled my pointage.
*I kid, Rod’s a generally nice guy, and I had a great time doing my first BAFS

Steve O ain’t got no game.
I’m going to argue that this Pointless Prize wasn’t really gamed. Besides doing one last ride on the last day (of 12 miles), I don’t think I made Bobco ride any more or any less. That he was in the ballpark enough to be within a 12 mile ride is impressive. The majority of participants crushed their guess which I’m very happy to see and I’m sure that they’re happy to see.
I will further argue that this was a great Pointless Prize to offer because the effort to participate was the lowest, unless you find math really really hard. My intent was to create something that first year players could easily participate in, although I should have promoted it a bit more aggressively. In hindsight, I think I could have made it a bit more fun by giving regular updates as well. Maybe next year.

YAY, I finally got to win something! Honestly, my guess was based on a goal that I had for Freezing Saddles this year looking at the previous 2 years (in 2015, my score was 1,660; in 2016, my score was 2,094), and the math formula helped me figure out how to get it. The last day was tough, though, because I knew I needed to do a lot of miles to get to my goal. On Sunday, I certainly was not physically prepared for a hilly Vasaloppet ride, and the extra ride I did (after a LONG nap) took the rest out of me, so much so that I didn’t ride my bike at all yesterday (yeah, I was THAT tired).
My other goal was to bike every day of my vacation (visiting my sister in FL), and I accomplished that, too.
No sandbagging was done, Steve, although I did get some sand on the tires a few times
drevil, you have nothing to feel bad about, you completely destroyed your guess in the best way possible (by doing lots and lots of riding)!

Steve O – 1,000,000 – 2,243 – 997,757Considering that I had no idea what I was doing and this was totally uncharted territory for me, I was glad that I totally blew it (and I just took a wild guess at 3456). If this would have been years past, my total would have been about 1,000. I wasn’t expecting such a dry winter.
Nice job to the people who came so close (and actually got it exact)!
