Yes, it’s annoying. It happened one minute apart in my case. I started walking so nobody asks me anymore.

Next time I might respond with “Excuse me I am on a break.” or “Excuse me I am enjoying the view before you stopped to ask me that question.”

Oh yeah, can I also mention that this did not happen 2 years ago when I was not quite a gray beard. But now that I am a gray beard.

I don’t know about you or rcannon100, but I have minimum beard length standards demanded by ssm508 to adhere to.

Maybe rcannnon100 needs to practice on bike recovery to protect the good Samaritans out there? I’ve only met a couple, faith in doG makes me feel like there may be more. Single speed guy with funny handlebars is one. A presidential appointee, who shall remain nameless, stopped to help me once. Whisk broom dude is another, but I actually stopped to help him.

When I was a teenager, I drove my mom’s old car, which had a bumper sticker that read “THIS IS NOT AN ABANDONED CAR”.

You might try a jersey that reads “I AM OK AND DO NOT NEED ANY HELP”

I remember at least once that I did, in fact, (temporarily, at least) abandon that car on the side of the road.

I have been violating my inlaws’ standards on minimum beard length since, well, I met them. Interestingly its Queenofthemark who insists on keeping below maximum beard length, perhaps in reaction to her upbringing.

This discussion of spousal/in-law requirements for beard lengths is really comforting me–apparently I’m not nearly as crazy as I thought with my beard requirements for my husband ;) Thanks ya’ll :)

I’d be careful. I don’t think he ever turned off his rant mode.

What’s beautiful is that that was your 613th post. On 6/13. Also known as mitzvah day

    Beards. Coincidences. Mysticism.

Are you stopping in random spots on the trail or where people tend to stop? Not trying to cover for people just looking to see why nice people are pestering you. You and I look about the same age / fitness level and I don’t get asked when stopped in the, for want of the right word, normal spots. I do get asked from time to time when I am off bike on the side when not at intersections, tops of hills, where seats or turns are and the like.
I think that many people are not experienced long term riders and don’t see the standard day in and out stuff us nutty daily mile grinders do. They are still on an adventure of sorts with each ride and have a bit of a heightened outlook.

Perhaps you need to game up a distasteful radiance of sorts? Works for me. People reel in the dogs and grab the kids when I roll through. 😎

BTW. You got the poor gray haired Trail Patrol talking about your request to them. One of the trail patrol members wants to give you a hug if she sees you. I recommend accepting. :)

I dunno. An acquaintance of mine in his early 40s had a heart attack while biking that took him completely by surprise. He could have used some help then.

Personally I think so many people trying to be helpful is great, esp in our current political climate. You never know; you may just need it some day. I could have used such help when I broke my wrist on the trail since my arm had suddenly become largely unusable and very painful.

As someone who is single and doesn’t have any family in the area, I greatly appreciate the kindness of strangers.

Perhaps it is ageism that is causing more people to offer you help; or maybe you are just paranoid. Perhaps you really do look like you are having a hard time. Regardless, it’s a pretty nice “problem” to have in my book.

Yup but that’s the thing. I am not having a heart attack. I dont have a broken wrist. Not a thing on my bike is broken. I have no injury. There is nothing about me that it appears wrong. And yet I get asked over and over and over if I need help. Yes, if I were in distress, I would welcome help. But I am not in distress. Sitting on a park bench on the WOD is not being in distress. Sitting on the grass in Bluemont Junction is not being in distress. And so on. And yet I am getting asked over and over and over.

It’s like Monty Python’s SPAM skit. Once is nice. Twice is funny. But vikings singing SPAM over and over and over is Really Annoying.

I am not saying dont help people. I’m saying earning your Good Samaritan Merit Badge by pestering people who have no need of your help gets really tiring. Take two seconds – just like TooWheeled mentioned – and see if someone even has the remotest need of help before pestering them.

    * Actually part of the phenomena probably is that for certain unrelated reasons I have restrained myself pretty much to WOD riding. Doesnt happen as much I guess when one gets off the big MUTs.

This is not an argument. This is abuse.

Oh,…, you want the MVT for an argument.

    Very well.

    Silly bunt.

Nothing’s more annoying than an over zealous good SPAMaritan…
