ParticipantOhio Drive from the 395 underpass to Buckeye Dr at Hains Point was milled this morning. There’s slopes, but be careful turning at the corners.

W&OD between MM12 and MM12.5 where they are installing rip rap in the creek. The pavement on the East bound side of the trail has a 20 foot section of wheel eating size cracks that are parallel to travel.
Isn’t the construction on the westbound side of the trail? Does this mean that this problem is not connected to the construction?

They have heavy equipment on the trail during the day that I am sure surpasses the weight the trail is built to accommodate.

Right on the construction.

This is the case. The trail surface is damaged both East and West bound but only East is wheel eating size so far.
We need Bollards!…..Or at least a couple of cones.

ParticipantIt’s that time of year again when the S-turn on the Custis becomes sketchy. Even though I thought I was taking it easy, I slipped out the rear tire. Released the brake and went into the wall, using the hand with the likely broken metatarsal to keep things together. Luckily no one was coming the other way; if they had been I likely would have been more careful. It really didn’t look that bad, but perhaps I hit that one rogue leaf or something.

Some leaves have a very high wax content, or something, so they are slippery even when dry. I recall from my mountain biking days that oak leaves are particularly bad.
The whole Custis could use a good sweeping.

Let’s just hope these rogue leaves don’t have nukes.

No wonder it took so long to find Chandra Levy’s remains.

ParticipantToday I saw that they have been installing the new lampposts along Lee Hwy on the Rosslyn hill. They look nice. However, the one on the east side of Scott St. appears to be directly in front of the walk signal. At least when I was coming down the hill and heading to the intersection, I saw the lamppost rather than the walk signal and was confused as to the state of the light – the bike signal was visible, but I guess I am used to using both as an indication of whether I need to stop, stop soon, or am fine. No idea if this is an issue for pedestrians, but likely it will be. Who chose that location for the post? Didn’t they check site lines?

There was some discussion of the clever streetlight positioning back in July, although not specifically related to blocking walk signals but more that they were putting them in dangerous places on the trail. SteveO had written the county and received a response.

Tim Kelley had also posted an announcement from the county.

Thank you. I did recall some traffic on it. I did not recall this one coming up in discussion. Still seems like they did not really check everything for the posts (not an uncommon problem, I have discovered). The one most of us commented on was obviously bad because the base was being installed right where we were currently trying to bike. This one isn’t as obvious to us since the post needs to be in place. Sigh.
