New crowdsourcing map for future Capital Bikeshare expansion

The new crowdsourcing map allows you to suggest new locations for CaBi stations at any spot in the DC region, although staff will look more closely at suggestions in current and proposed CaBi areas (DC, Arlington, Alexandria, Bethesda, Silver Spring, Shady Grove). You can post as many suggestions as you want. It doesn’t mean that a station will be installed at those areas, but it does mean that you will be able to participate in the decision-making process. (Just be sure not to suggest any stations in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean like one person seems to have done. For some reason, I seriously doubt CaBi will be installing any stations off the coast of Ghana.)

Finally CaBi has decided to listen to the crowd. I guess to many requests in their inbox must have prompted this suggestion. Will it work, if I suggest a location multiple times

FYI–this map has been available since June and was used in gathering public input for Arlington’s upcoming round of expansion. It was very useful for finding out what people liked and disliked!

Back when it was initially released, it would only let you mark areas in the Rosslyn/Ballston Corridor; now you can put them anywhere. Unfortunately the data hasn’t been reset since the restriction was lifted so you have a bunch of spots that were marked on the edge of the old boundary since it was as close as people could get to where they actually wanted the station. A good example is the “2300 Washington Blvd” spot that is basically marked in the middle of a highway interchange – people really wanted to mark down by the DHS building, but that was outside the original R/B pilot area.

The crowd sourcing map also doesn’t show that the trail now goes under I 395. People looking at that map might not realize how easy it would be to use bikeshare to get from Shirlington to Potomac Yards, Crystal City, Pentagon City or even DC, as well as Old Town, Del Ray, etc. if they eventually get bikeshare. Even so, it’s great that Arlington is making this tool available so everyone can provide input.
