Was not my finest. It started OK as I stopped off at Bikenetic to see Dirt and talk new cross/commuter tires as mine are completely shot and flatting all the time. Dirt was not around but Jan was glad to help out. I left informed but without new rubber for now. Back on the WOD and being careful to elude the dreaded FCPD I slowed at the Grove St. crossing only to be passed by a dude with absolutely no regard for the stop sign. He flew through the intersection just as I was getting clipped in without even a look. He then pulled the ultimate DB move, passing (and nearly clipping) two woman with strollers as they crossed paths with a gentleman walking towards them… yep, four abreast with him at speed. The gentleman yelled and put his hands out for protection and the ladies screamed. I slowed, apologized for his behavior and chased the scum down. As I got next to him (and gestured for him to remove his headphones) I became possessed by a sudden calmness (weird). I decided to politely explain what I had just witnessed and suggested better methods for future situations… he tolerated my intrusion and then I flatted. DANG IT! Luckily it was directly in front of the “Free Air” station on the WOD so I rolled my bike to the station, leaned my steed against the air machine (you can see where this is going), started taking off my back pack when I watched my bike slowly roll forward and fall against the pole…. result:

Needless to say, wasn’t a great ride home.

Why was yesterday afternoon’s rain in Arlington limited to the period of 5:00 to 5:30? :(

Because the rest of it had already fallen on northern France. Ask Chris Froome about it. He’ll tell ya. :-

Also, because the weather gods knew I was planning on leaving work closer to six.

Reminder to self: never trust weather futurecast. I timed it to leave at 5:05pm and figured I would be home by 6:20 missing the storm around 6:30/6:45. The storm came earlier and decided to just drench me. And as others noted, why wind, why. The worst is when you’re going downhill building speed and the gust comes to the point where you’re actual working as if you’re going up the hill. Oh well, what doesn’t kill me…

Compared to Tuesday night, yesterday’s headwind at only 15 mph, gusting to 25, felt downright calm!

Having as much fun as I am having on my gravel commute this week seems somehow immoral, or at least like it must be illegal. I’ll probably go to hell for it, so I’m glad I’ll only be doing it for two weeks! 😎

I just did a Chipotle calorie check on what I would get as my burrito, 1120 calories. Thats only about a 22 mile ride for me. ;)

The Chipotle Nutrition Calculator is horrifying. 500mg of sodium in their red salsas? And sugar, too.

I prefer Boloco — and you’re right, always avoid the sauces, they’re mostly just glorified salt and sugar.

I’m always amused in the Subway sandwich line when people go for the low-calorie stuff and then pour on gobs of ketchup or honey mustard…

This is the problem with fast food – you try to replace flavor from fat (cheese, sour cream) with flavor from actual flavor and you end up with a ton of added sugar and salt. Next time I go to Chipotle, maybe I’ll bring my own homemade hot sauce. Lightly salted pineapple habanero sauce FTW.

My favorite is only 565 calories if I leave off the guac (saving 200 calories). Burrito bowl, no meat (substitute safritas), cheese or sour cream, and it’s a pretty healthy meal with a good amount of protein.

One of my favorite eavesdropping conversations was along these lines. A woman was talking to another woman in front of me at Chipotle about “going all healthy and shtz.” She proceeded to order the burrito bowl while lecturing her friend on how the bowl has less calories. But wait, she then order the flour tortilla shell on the side because otherwise “it’s losing coin.” Moving down the aisle, she then told the person I will get chicken to be healthier. Makes sense, right? It does until she asks for a double serving of chicken after telling the poor worker he hadn’t put enough on after her second request for more. Cheese? Of course. Sour cream? Double. Salsa? “On the side because that’s the healthy way.” After all of that, her friend asked if she was going to drink water and she explained “hell no” because she just given up all of those calories and then ordered herself a large fountain drink. I didn’t stick around to see if she got diet soda or not.

Not that I order all that much better, I just don’t pretend that ordering my carnitas burrito at chipotle is any way healthy except in me needing some proteins and lettuce. The rest is all junk, but good tasting junk. :)

Interestingly, my morning + evening commutes total around 1100-1200 calories when they add up to 36 miles (16 miles in AM @450 calories and 20 miles in PM @ 650 calories). But I can ride 55 miles in the morning at a pretty spirited pace and also only use ~1200 calories. I haven’t completely figured out whether my Garmin HR-based calculations are just buggy or there is a significant difference in calorie usage based on temperature, etc.

Personally, I don’t think Chipotle is all that bad — at least on occasion. Sure it’s high calorie, but if I’m gonna eat 1200 calories for lunch anyway having it in burrito form is certainly a delicious way to go. Maybe the salt could be less, but I tend to crave salt on my meals so it’s usually very welcome. What amuses me is when my coworkers look up from their Chipotle burritos at me eating 1/2 lb of pasta w/ tomato sauce (or equivalents quantities of rice + sauce) and express their amazement that I consume so much food. I generally have to explain that it’s not actually any more calories than the burrito they’re holding. My wife also finds it amusing that a year ago I would have had absolutely no idea how many calories are in a banana.

    .

I never understand the calorie counters. Map My Ride claims I did 1700 kcalories on this mornings ride (17.25 miles, 800′ elevation gain, in 1hr 14 minutes or so). But I think it may be overcounting. Even being a big guy, I’m convinced it’s maybe 1,100 if I’m lucky.

This is where a power meter is extremely helpful, which measures output in kilojoules, which is a fairly close approximation to food calories. Unless I’m riding in the mountains, for me at my weight, 1000 calories gets me about 20 miles regardless of how fast I go.

Yeah, I will eventually break down and get a PM to cross reference. People suggest that the newer Garmin calculations are pretty accurate (when using HR strap), but definitely the numbers that Strava outputs based on estimated power are a lot higher. And when I don’t have the HR monitor on, Garmin always reads much, much higher (like 2x) using their generic speed/distance algorithm.

A 17.5 mile ride at commute-pace for me usually lands me around 500-600 calories. A 15-mile hill ride around 650 a 50-55 mile hill ride + commute around 1700. Burned more when I weighed more, though (I am around 170lbs now).
