The weirdest part is:
So, I drive with my kids out Hilltop and down Cedar into Vienna on Thursday afternoons, and we almost always see a cyclist on a red Trek(?) riding out that way. Is that you? Cuz that would be weird! But also totally awesome!

+1 for calling the company with the information you have.
Yeah, I intend on calling them but I worry about timing. The officer that took my information and incident report said he was going to be calling and seeing if they could get the driver’s information but felt it was a slim chance since he didn’t expect they record gps/tracking information for an average work van. The officer was generally pretty good about the whole thing. I had initially called as a ‘hit and run’ but he informed me that was essentially impossible for me to prove since I had zero proof the van actually even knew they hit me.. cause I don’t make a loud noise when I get sideswiped. Which is sad, but I also understand the logic. I also can’t find that wording in the statue. But at this point I’m generally excited he actually took notes and seemed to care even a little bit.
It is unfortunate that he certainly had the car not at fault logic hard wired. While I was able to bring him around on my situation, he shared a few anecdotal stories from pedestrians who had been hit and it was hard not to try and make the point that the individual in the killing box should have a bit more burden on them to operate it safely. Ironically, he knew this as he refused to join the motorcycle squad because of all the bad accidents that occur to even officers on motorcycles. Yet, probably because he sees the legal system constantly side with drivers he still has accepted the general ‘it was an accident’ attitude. It was an interesting mental split to observe.
By the time I was done with the officer it was well past 5pm and they were closed when he called yesterday evening.

Blue bike, white handle bars and saddle, belt drive.

Not to hog the thread, but I just got a call from the officer and they do have GPS on their vehicles, but they also have subcontractors who don’t have GPS. Either way, it is nice to see that they are taking it seriously.

ParticipantSigh…Four blocks from home and the heavens opened up. I may as well have ridden the entire 8 miles in the rain. Note to self: ride faster.

ParticipantSo much for racing home to beat the storm… 15 minutes into a 25-minute ride, the skies opened up and I had to take shelter under an overhang along Westmoreland. After 10 minutes, it abated just enough to run into Tri360, hang out, and pick up a few necessities. 15 minutes later – blue skies and sunshine and odd ground mist.
I heard a tree crack and fall just as I turned the corner onto Westmoreland – glad I wasn’t 10 seconds faster. Thankfully, it didn’t hit anyone or block the whole road but it was a good reminder that maybe I shouldn’t try to beat the storm next time.

ParticipantIs there a “cars in the bike lanes” thread? I did a quick search but didn’t find anything.
I know there’s a Twitter account out there, but I don’t use Twitter much.
Two more examples, from Tue. June 9:

ParticipantHmm, a coworker mentioned this to me because he knows my bike route:
WASHINGTON — D.C. Police are investigating a fatal accident in the Glover Park area of Northwest Washington.
A woman was hit by a car along Wisconsin Avenue near Calvert Street Thursday night. It happened around 6:15 p.m.
http://wtop.com/dc/2015/06/woman-dies-after-being-hit-by-car-in-northwest-d-c/Sad. Also feeling fortunate I rode through 15 minutes beforehand. I’m curious what happened. If I had to guess, it would be someone ran the red and hit the pedestrian or the pedestrian tried darting across the street to catch the bus. Regardless, it’s horribly designed at that intersection with cars having to shift over a lane and the stop light to go down 37th. And they just put a speed camera in on that downhill stretch of Wisconsin maybe two months ago (it’s the stop light just south of the Russian Embassy).

ParticipantThe northernmost flyover at National Airport was crowded with rubberneckers as we rode home from last night’s happy hour. I finally found out why, it appears a DC taxi missed the runway on its landing approach. (sorry for the callousness of the post, but how do you get a taxi on its roof so far off the road?)

ParticipantThanks for finding out what that was about, but how on earth . . .?

ParticipantMy guess: over-correction at high speed. Easy to roll-over a vehicle that way. Happened right in front of me on the Beltway couple years back.
