Nice. Sometimes one needs a pleasant ride without anything else… like a stiff headwind, for example.

I worked late tonight and took the George Mason bridge & Columbia Island route home at about 9:30 pm. An absolutely perfect night weather wise. No bugs!!! I was all geared up for battling no see ‘ums, black flies, and mosquitoes but I guess they all go to bed early. Only had to contend with a hitchhiker stink bug.

There were plenty of “walkers” at Columbia Island. I’m fine with it since they have no interest in a lady and I think it makes the park safer at night.

Now that was a tad uncomfortable.

    I really need to just stop trusting the weather forecasts. 5% at 5pm, 25% at 6pm, 50% at 7pm, and 70% at 8pm translated to 5:30pm-7:30pm 100%.

I thought I could wait it out right after DCA atop the hill. After a few minutes and a few bolts of lightning, I realized that may be a poor idea. It seemed to be dying down so I plodded along. Ha, then the skies opened up with painful giant rain drops falling. By the time I got to OT, I was drenched and the rain turned horizontal at that point. I kept going and it died down again by the time I got to the Wilson Bridge. I stopped oh-so-briefly in Belle View Plaza and right as I was 2/3 of the way up the Beacon Hill climb, boom, the storm came back.

I tried to squeeze out my clothes when I got home. I’m pretty sure even my socks could have filled a full glass of water.

All of that said, eh, the time difference was only 7-10 minutes for me and it was kind of fun having coldish rain hit me while super warm puddles splashed up on me–that kid in the rain feeling. So, while I hate the time to dry off the bike, it was what it was.

As of last night, there were detours on both ends of the Capital Crescent Trail (in Bethesda and Georgetown).

In Bethesda, the construction is between the water fountain and Bethesda Avenue. (In the photo, looking north from just beyond the water fountain, the building on the left is the Barnes & Noble.) The detour takes you up onto a sidewalk behind the newly constructed apartment buildings, then onto Woodmont Avenue.

In Georgetown, just after you go under the bridge from Water Street, the old path is all dug up. A new path has been constructed nearer to the river, and then it joins up with the CCT just beyond the construction area.

Count on getting wet this p.m. Pretty much guaranteed.

Flood watch from 1200-0200, watch out flooded areas; also, storms might get a little windy so watch out for fallen branches as well.

1-2 inches per hour. Definitely enough to pond in low areas, and to cause streams to rise.

    Decline.

I got stuck in last Monday and Thursday’s downpours. I figure karma says I shall stay dry today, especially because the weathermen say I will get soaked.

I could be on a bike getting a little wet, or in a car with drivers who treat drops of rain as a diabolical paralytic agent, or stuck in a concrete tube in a metal subway car that might randomly burst into thick, choking smoke.

The option that would work for me here is:

If i’m going to get really wet, I may as well use the current to my favor and head down river in style.

…was dry, believe it or not. I danced between cells all the way home.
