It was a little lonely out on the MVT this evening. Where was everyone? It was a glorious, post-rain, misty, low cloud cover ride home.
+1 Everybody else missed out. I had a glorious ride home, too.

ParticipantAccording to the forecast, I will only get 40% wet tonight.

That is only because the other 60% will be frozen.
Lovely day for a ride!

ParticipantYes. I believe that this evening will be BAFS training weather… is there still a freezing rain advisory (apparently there was one earlier in Arlington)?

ParticipantThat was a character building commute. I got to the office, and the internet was down, so I would have turned around and gone right back home except for a going-away lunch for a colleague. The network was still down after lunch, so I rode home in the 34 degree rain at 3 pm or so. Even though I really wasn’t properly dressed, I didn’t get that cold.

ParticipantBack to work over winter break means back to bike commuting…and the rain. Rain gear was freaking on point tonight though…arrived home completely dry, even with a detour to Bikenetic that added a couple extra miles.

ParticipantThis is where my bike ended up after this evening’s commute. In the detached garage, being wiped down and lubed, to the accompaniment of WETA-FM on the radio, being warmed by two kerosene heaters, with the mechanic being warmed by Bourbon. I expect the next two evenings to end in the same manner.

Low and slow shop time is the best
Much covet on the gas station sign in the corner.

Awesome. The heaters, the bourbon, the care and maintenance of the bike.
And thanks for making me feel bad – I have a wonderful garage (minus bike tools for the time being) and have not wiped down the bike following last night’s commute.
The ride in this morning was a wee bit… grimy.

ParticipantAm I crazy for loving last night’s wet ride? Even with the conditions, everything just felt great. Somehow I managed two personal records last night on Strava. I may have a problem

Up top:
Pants:
Showers Pass Club Convertible 2
Shoes:
Sidi Diablo
Gloves:
I wasn’t actually wearing my Giro waterproof gloves, but opted instead to try out the new PI Elite Softshells that I just got. They are definitely not waterproof, but they didn’t start to soak through until I was almost home, and even then they were still warm.
Edit: my hands probably would’ve been dry had I put my Bar Mitts on, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet since it hasn’t been cold enough to warrant them.

Seconded. Last night was hands down the wettest, coldest commute I have ever done. The only dry part of me was my top – my Showers Pass jacket has been a great investment. I think I need to upgrade some gear if I’m going to be any help to my team during Freezing Saddles!

ParticipantWool base layers will keep you pretty warm even if your outer layers don’t keep you dry.

ParticipantI loved last night’s rainy commute too. Most recent change – I’ve decided to completely stop buying expensive gloves for wet or cold weather. I just use light Fall gloves now with Bar Mitts. I might not trust that yet for a really long ride in a cold rain, but I know it works well for my commute. Light gloves feel more comfortable to me and I like having more dexterity. My hands were warm and (as I recall) dry when I got home last night.
