In Russia, tires puncture you.

I’ll be driving home today. Took the car. Does anyone else have an issue where they don’t use their car for a few weeks and then when you do use it the brakes sound like death? My guess is rust.
On Monday this week I got to take the W&O for the first time ever to get to NFCU and to Walgreens in Vienna. Lovely. You all are spoiled. But I took the wrong turn off / went too far like 2 or 3 times. I need some signage or something for those little branch / off-shoots that put you onto neighborhoods.

Yeah, I get this pretty much every time I drive.

ParticipantLast night I found myself as one of three cyclists climbing Beacon Hill Rd hill from Ft Hunt upward at the same time. I’ve been on it before with another cyclist once or twice, but never three. Hope the trend continues!

Posted this on a separate thread recently, but I blogged about this signage problem a few years ago. Sorry for those of you who already saw it.

ParticipantFriday evening, overcast, threatening to drizzle. Left office in SW DC, detoured up to U Street for two site visits before heading to Key Bridge and Wilson Blvd. Nothing notable about that. But jeez, every block in DC was swarming with cyclists; 4 or 5 every block, going every which way. People just heading home from work or just going out for the night. Only one or two cyclists kitted out for a long commute; rest just in normal dress. I’ve now officially seen a lot of progress in my life, and I wasn’t even born during the Depression.
Taking me down a notch were the “cyclists” on saw at Rhodes and Wilson by Rhodes Tavern. I was westbound stopped at my red; dark by now. Heading eastbound against traffic was a pack of a dozen kids on bikes, not a single light or reflector, all dark clothing, popping wheelies and generally not giving a sh:t. Just swarming through the intersection against the light nearly getting creamed by cars on Rhodes with the green. Just like the ATV swarms infecting parts of DC recently. Win because at least they were bikes? The kids these days…

ParticipantMonday evening, as I was attempting some Cat 6 racing on the way home, out of the misty dusk came a salmon. Right at me. In the Gallows bike lane. I’ve heard of these creatures before, but never seen one in the wild, swimming upstream. Thankfully, he was more scared of me then I was of him, particularly when I realized I was, um, yelling at him. He hugged the curb (hope he has gatorskins!) and we passed without incident.

ParticipantWill be a wet one. Per the Capitol Weather Gang, “The onset of rain in the immediate metro region is likely to between around 2 and 5 p.m. Wednesday’s rush hour could be a mess, with downpours, reduced visibility, and ponding of water on roadways.”
As long as temps are 55 or above, I’m still thinking the rain bike with neoprene socks and a not-very-water-resistant jacket.

Gonna make for an interesting drive through the night to Niagara Falls for a long weekend vacation. Hopefully it’ll be a little tamer north and west of here. It’s hard enough taking turns driving through the dark of night. Even worse if there’s rain…

I was thinking of maybe biking it until I read about the 30-40mph winds. Then I decided with my luck they would be in my face the whole time on top of the couple inches of rain projected.
And you’re welcome, because my not biking means it will be bone dry during the hours of 6:30-8:30 and 5-7pm.

Torrents of falling water followed by…torrents of falling water.

ParticipantI was covered by dozens and dozens of bugs when I got home. I assume most were dead; none were moving. Face, head, chest, even down to my belly (sweat carried them there?), covered with bugs. I noticed that as I passed through the Crystal City Connector onto the MVT that it was solid bugs for a couple hundred yards, so I suppose most of them rode the final 21 miles home with me. Damn freeloaders…

And I’ll bet they didn’t even help pedal!

Just like I said, you’re 50% there by default of my not biking and sitting in miserable traffic while I watched a few of you bike by. Grrrr, weather.

ParticipantTerpfan, that’s what you get for listening to WTOP. They make a heavy rain sound as if portals to Hell are about to open around the region. The ride in was completely uneventful, and the forecast is that most of the rain will be gone by 7 pm. In fact, since I had a strong headwind, you would have had a power assist on your ride.
