My evening commute would have been a lot nicer if it hadn’t started by discovering that someone had stolen my jacket, my Bar Mitts, my gloves, my headlight, and my Garmin –just in time for a ride in the dark, the cold, and the wind. The good news, such as it is, for tonight’s ride, was that they left my heavy wool sweater, I have a Cycliq Fly 12 video camera and headlight (which I’d taken up to my office for a master reset and a charge, because it had been acting up) in addition to my regular headlight, and I have a watch which is also a Garmin. Longer term, the best news was that they left behind my Cycliq Fly 6 video camera and tail light, and my Ortlieb panniers, either of which was actually more valuable than the Bar Mitts.
I think I’ll be taking my bike up to my office, instead of leaving it parked in the garage, until my firm moves to a new building which will have a bike cage.
Wow, that’s terrible. Especially if the thief is a fellow cyclist. Seriously evil.

Well, I don’t know that the thief is a fellow cyclist. The person took my aging Bar Mitts, but left my nearly new Ortlieb panniers and Cycliq Fly6 video camera/tail light behind. I get the impression it was a noncyclist looking for things of obvious value to sell.
The good news is, I heard from my homeowner’s insurance company today, and they will cover all of it except for the $250 deductible. So long as I replace it, they won’t even deduct depreciation. So I actually get new Bar Mitts, etc.

Too bad you didn’t have the video running.
This totally sucks, btw.January 28, 2017 at 2:56 am #1064940cvcalhoun

This totally sucks, btw.Yeah, I don’t think the battery would hold out if I left it running all day. Plus, having it on might just call a thief’s attention to it.
As it is, homeowners insurance will cover most of the loss. And I’m bringing my bike up to my office until we move in February, after which I’ll have access to a secure bike cage.

ParticipantFriday’s commute home started with cars acting crazy in Georgetown and Key Bridge pedestrians being oblivious (yeah, I elbowed the one in the white shoes), but then brightened significantly with passing & greeting a daily commuter friend, catching a glorious sunset on the memorials & monuments and then meeting up with a fellow Freezing Saddles friend. It all turned out good.

ParticipantLast night, coming home along 27 next to the Pentagon just south of that construction site around 6:30, I heard yelling. To my surprise, a guy was standing behind a smart car (I think it was a Car2Go) with its flashers on on the opposite (southbound) side of 27. After some gesturing and shouting I figured out that he was stuck, had no cell phone, and couldn’t figure out how to walk to get help. I called the Arlington non-emergency line and they said they’d send someone, although they were more than a little confused about what happened and where it was (“so you’re on 395? on your bike?” “no…”). The guy gestured for me to go ahead and that he was ok after a few mins, which I did because I have a little one at home. Hope they showed up quickly… though I’m sure the Pentagon Police would have got him sooner or later.
It was also an interesting opportunity for an informal survey of how many people would ask if everything was ok, given that I was standing by the side of the road with my bike laid down. Five cyclists and one runner passed by; three of the cyclists and the runner asked to help. Good karma, everyone

ParticipantTwo deer and I startled each other on the W&OD. No injuries and since this wasn’t the first time, my heart didn’t need to race.

I just about had an altercation with a R.O.U.S (muskrat) in the dark along the Nidda.

ParticipantFinally ran over a squirrel Wednesday evening (or rather, the squirrel ran under me). We all knew this day would come. I didn’t go over the bars, partially because I was going slowly due to pedestrians. Same pedestrians said the squirrel was fine and ran up a tree. Even though squirrels are basically rats with fluffy tails, I hope it was fine and not dying slowly and painfully from internal injuries.

Man! I have been trying to do this for years. Why does everyone else have all the luck?

I only want to harm the squirrels that destroy my garden. My dog will catch and kill rabbits*, but just looks at the damn squirrels, and they won’t fall for live trapping anymore. If I could run over them in the yard with the mountain bike, I would. The rest may go in peace.
*ETA: We do not encourage the dog to kill bunnies.

My dog will chase rabbits if they run. I don’t think she would have any idea what to do with a rabbit if she caught it. And when a rabbit once just stood still and wouldn’t move, she just looked confused. You could see her thinking, “How am I supposed to chase something that’s not running?”

ParticipantMy commute tonight was gorgeous! I left Foggy Bottom just after sunset, and was treated to absolutely beautiful skies as I rode Westward into the dusk.
