Ah, the omnipresent NW (or WNW or NNW) wind. Does it ever blow the other direction?
Still there is some lovely weather coming behind that wind so I’ll take it!
Well, actually last week it was mostly Southerly winds for a change. It didn’t help since I was riding down the Potomac. Sigh.

I think last night’s wind was omnidirectional. It seemed no matter which direction I turned, the wind was smacking me in the face, except for the one blissful minute when it all seemed to go away. Then I turned a corner again.

ParticipantYes, very… exciting crossing the 14th Street bridge last night with the wind…

I kept trying to look at various trees and grass to see the direction but it really seemed like it was just “blowing” in all random directions. Should be a little more tame this PM but when I walked out for lunch, there was def a breeze.

ParticipantI got a shoutout from a young teen as I passed him and his friends up the Custis corkscrew going home yesterday. It’s not often that cyclists are impressed with my climbing speed.

ParticipantThe breeze/wind seems to be picking up for the afternoon commute…sigh…

ParticipantEvening commute was very pleasant. Added two laps of Hains Point, where I was passed, as if standing still, by multitudes of cyclists…
More miles, more miles, more miles. Then I shall return for my revenge.
Very pleasant evening ride – windy but not at all bad.

ParticipantEvening commute (first commute since I started the job!) was pleasant for the first half, then my muscles wore out for the last half (total of 20 miles, 40 for the day). Post commute involved downing a smoothie, and promptly getting the shakes, diarrhea, and puking! Perhaps I shouldn’t double my weekly mileage in a single day.

ParticipantClose to my shortest commute yesterday evening, .39 miles up the Rosslyn hill on Wilson to Guajillos in Colonial Village for dinner with my wife and the person she will be replacing in Kyiv. I think my shortest evening bike ride commute was from my office parking garage to bus stops on N Moore by the Rosslyn Metro when I discovered I had a flat tire and no tools/spare tube to fix it.

ParticipantMassive kudos for the correct spelling of Kyiv!
Kinda jealous you’re getting to go to Ukraine, a place near and dear to my heart. We can discuss at lunch, I guess…

ParticipantWell, my wife studied Ukrainian, too bad I’m going to have to have a short course of Russian in September (no short course of Ukrainian offered).

You may want to avoid busting out the Russian first thing when you meet someone over there right at the moment. Probably better to try English first.

Actually Russian is the day-to-day spoken language of the majority of people in Kyiv, and a vary large portion of the country generally. Ukraine is a complicated place in some ways, but the language thing gets overblown and oversimplified in western news… surprise surprise. Speaking Russian, especially as a foreigner just trying to communicate, is not going to cause you trouble even in far western Ukraine.

My comment was meant more lightheartedly, in a geo-political sense.

ParticipantLet me know if you need some civil society contacts – worked in Ukraine for the better part of the last four years.
