This memorial plaque explains that Herndon was a popular summer destination at the turn of the 19th century. At that time, Herndon was considered “the Virginia countryside,” and was an hours ride by train from DC. This plaque is located on the site of the Darlington Grove estate belonging to prominent DC attorney J.J. Darlington, and was the center of social activity in Herndon.

Ratcliffe Park is named as a memorial to Richard Ratcliffe (1750-1825), who is considered the founder of what is now Fairfax City. In 1798 Richard Ratcliffe donated (sold for $1) four acres of his land to be the site of the new county courthouse. He then laid out what was later to be renamed Fairfax City and got the town chartered by the General Assembly of Virginia in 1805. He served variously as the Fairfax County sheriff, coroner, justice, patroller, overseer of the poor, constable, commissioner of the revenue, jail inspector, superintendent of elections, candidate for the Virginia General Assembly and designer and developer of Providence, the town that we now call the City of Fairfax.

Does a flagpole count as a memorial when it’s dedicated to our veterans?

I better get some stinking bonus points for this one!!

Pat Garrett was the local sheriff that killed Billy The Kid. This was a memorial to him, as he was killed within a short distance of here (Las Cruces, NM).
I rode my bike off the pavement to get it into the picture. Both tires went flat within two miles thanks to about 30 thorns in each tire. I won’t do that again!!
