This memorial plaque commemorates “The Big Fire” in Herndon in 1917. The fire started in a livery stable and resulted in the loss of 14 buildings. This spurred the town of Herndon to form the Herndon Volunteer Fire Department.

    Fort Scott Memorial Plaque
    a5b8998b6d883b4cf7432b697a8565e5.jpg
named for General Winfield Scott, who was then General-in-Chief of the Union Army, it was a detached lunette constructed in May 1861 to guard the south flank of the defenses of Washington during the American Civil War. An historic marker and a small remnant of the fort are the only evidence of the site of the fort on the grounds of what is now Fort Scott Park in Arlington County, Virginia.

I had given up on finding something, but I saw a sign for a museum, so I went to look at that. No luck there, but I found this at the local park next to it. Yay!!

It’s hard to imagine that they built airplanes near the Riverdale Park Plaza. I forgot to post this here when I took the pix. I used the #monuments in Strava, so I hope it counts.
