Me: “Er . . . it’s all right. It’s so rare that I get to fall dramatically in the middle of the trail. Or to demonstrate my Rule 5 awesomeness to all who happen to notice my leg for the rest of the ride home.”

ParticipantThe two patrons of the Exxon gas station on Canal at the DC side of the Key Bridge:
Patron #1: When pulling into a driveway from the roadway, turning signals help those on the sidewalk understand your intentions. Also, looking to see if there are people on the sidewalk about to move into the driveway will help you avoid hitting them.
Patron #2: When pulling out of a driveway onto the roadway, looking both ways will help you avoid hitting people on the sidewalk who have the right of way.tl;dr: Almost taken out twice at the gas station, once at the inbound driveway, once at the outbound driveway.

ParticipantTo the cyclist crossing Maine Avenue at evening rush hour: getting impatient waiting for the light, going through the red light, crossing the EB lane during a break in traffic, easing in next to a very large bus going WB and then weaving from there in front of a fast-moving car to head up 15th st? I’m assuming you were on your way to defuse a bomb because why else would you take your life in your hands like that to save about 45 seconds?

ParticipantJust read the rules, that was great although I think I definitely break 56, I love my soy latte’s and sorry to say I do break 62 but I only have the music in one ear, how else would I be able to sing all my songs as I ride down the Mount Vernon Trail. I am sure the walkers would miss my singing.

Seriously,it was nuts out there today, and not in a good way.
Yep, same here. I was nursing my bike home with two broken rear spokes and a wheel that felt like a noodle for the last 12 miles… had to stand for a bunch of it to keep the weight off. One by one I was passed dangerously by jerks with no concern for anyone but themselves. I must admit I finally barked at two guys who passed me without warning to be told that they did in fact warn me…Sorry, I didn’t hear you, but thanks for being the only two that tried and apologies for snapping at you both!

ParticipantYou: Cyclist coming down Virginia Rd at speed about to turn left (east) onto the W&OD
ME: Idiot heading west on the W&OD looking over my left shoulder at the Helpy letting me pass.Sorry I almost collided with you, and thank you for being prepared for my lack of awareness. My only excuse is…. actually no excuse….I was a tool today!

ParticipantYou: 9-10 year old kid riding behind his dad on the Custis this morning. You went off the trail and into the bushes as I passed you way-wide to the left. Way to hang on and nice recovery! I thought for sure you were going to crash, but you didn’t even put a foot down.

Dang, Dickie, you are accident prone. Do you drink coffee before you ride?

I think Dickie needs to remove the large magnet on his bike. People just can’t stop riding into him

Of course, there is a stop sign there at Shreve for those descending Viriginia, but then it’s placed about ten feet after the crosswalk/trail crossing.
