The two guys that decided I wasn’t going fast enough down Rosslyn hill this morning and salmoned down Lee Hwy for the entire stretch just missed a connection with Darwin…and a lot of good it did them as I ended up catching up with them at the Kennedy Center.
Ah, the Custis sidewalk. This stretch is frustrating, especially downhill. I stop at all lights, and sometimes feel like I’m the only one… I could see why someone would “Idaho stop” these lights, since they’re stupidly timed, but given the timing of the lights at Fort Myer and Lynn, I almost always catch people who run the lights going downhill. Even on my slow commuter bike. People, don’t bother running these lights. You make us look bad, and you gain, literally, nothing.

ParticipantTo the two DC firefighters in the MD tagged private vehicle on 6th St NW- I don’t care that you weren’t honking at me and my SO. You very loudly, very unexpectedly, and very needlessly blared your horn repeatedly at another driver that slowed down going through an intersection very close to two people on bicycles because you decided a driver “prevented” you from making the next light (which you weren’t going to make anyway… trust me, I do this every day) while you were speeding and weaving through the few cars on the road while 2 blocks from the station that was not responding to any calls- you are still a f!#$ing a@@hole no matter what “explanation” that was you were trying to yell at me as you were rolling up your window after I told you as much.

The flip side of this is that he’s probably had experience with a bunch of douchey cyclists passing too closely (the famous “middle lane pass”–how many times have you seen an oncoming cyclist approaching while you’re about to pass an oncoming pedestrian and thought “this assho1e is going to pass between us, isn’t he?”). If I’m passing properly, it doesn’t matter–so I think I could safely ignore it.
I was on the MVT the other night and actually had someone call that behavior. I was heading south and passing a northbound ped as a faster southbound cyclist called “up the middle” for his pass.

Wow, that’s a rare combination of self-awareness and ELITE obliviousness.

Was it a guy wearing a Honey Stinger jersey and trying to stay on his aero bars? A guy matching that description made a reckless “up the middle” pass around me and I saw him do it several more times as he approached Gravelly Point.

I had a run in with that guy (Honey Stinger jersey assclown) on the MVT a few weeks ago. That guy really needs to knock it off before he kills somebody.

Participantme: Riding in line with some slow moving traffic during the morning rush in the pouring rain.
you: Cab who honked at me a few times and then pulled up next to me to yell at me for not riding off to the side.
No matter what we do, somebody’s getting pissed about it. It’s pouring rain, the morning rush, riding down a one-way with driveways and cross-streets on both sides, in slow moving traffic and you want me to lane split? What for?
This had nothing to do with how fast I was going, as I certainly wasn’t the one holding up traffic. This guy honked at me just because I was on a bike and was in front of him.

ParticipantMy rides around town during the work day to/from meetings are usually so tranquil compared to commuting hours. So much so that it’s easy to let your guard down and just enjoy being outside on a better than expected afternoon.
And then on Penn Ave some girl tries to pass a pedicab in the intersection, coming at you head on right by the barriers. At that exact moment, a cabbie veers into the bike lane to avoid something or other. And you end up with an arm inside the open driver’s window grasping onto the cab’s “oh shit” handle while screaming foul, unprintable things at the salmoning rider, cabbie, and any gods they might pray to.
You do this right in front of your office building, during the lunch hour, then go sit in your office to see who drops by to compliment your colorful vocabulary. ::ETA:: No one, thank the previously blasphemed gods.

ParticipantTo the guy in front of me on the TR bridge this morning: please continue to ride at a pace that is comfortable and safe for you – you were doing absolutely nothing wrong. I just thought I was going to die of old age before getting to the other side, is all. :p

I wonder if we were behind the same guy…I (in a BikeArlington jersey) was the first of at least three people behind him. It was sooo painful, but I am really loath to pass cyclists there.

Yep, I was the third guy, in the Bikenetic jersey who headed towards 23rd while you went through the Virginia Ave underpass. Good Morning!
I won’t pass slower cyclists on the bridge unless they literally stop and wave me past – the potential consequences of failure are too steep.

ParticipantTo literally almost Every Single Person, pedestrians, cyclists, joggers, everyone, I encountered on the MCT/WOD this evening:

Yeah. Similar experience until I got off the trails. I was almost hit head-on by several people while I was on the trails tonight…

ParticipantI experienced the same thing as Drewdane and DaveK tonight. It looked like everyone was racing to get to Hains Point too, in the midst of all the other chaos. I saw cyclists weaving in and out and screaming down the trail right at Gravelly Point, where there were lots of kids and families on the trail. I usually try to keep my thoughts to myself, but I couldn’t keep from yelling “slow down!” as some people raced toward the porta potty part of the trail where kids were all over the place. It’s not even Thursday yet. Be careful, people, regardless of mode of travel.
