Not trying to start an argument, but it is not clear to me who has the right of way at that intersection. The yield sign sits in the middle of the V created by the intersection. Neither path is going exactly straight at that point. Since the 4MR trail ends at that point, I’ve always considered those on the MVT to have the right of way, but I don’t count on 4MR users yielding the right of way.
Might make sense to mark a side stripe (European style) to indicate which path is the primary. I agree that the primary should be the MVT but it is often a bit confusing there.

I wouldn’t disagree with the need for better signage. The sign is tilted the 4MR way, but it would be better if they simply moved it onto the airport side of the path there. And you’re definitely right not to count on folks yielding. It’s not the first nor will it be the last of someone failing to yield there. Thankfully it’s easier heading northbound to diverty presuming no one is coming the other way.

ParticipantI took a closer look this morning and note that the painted lane markers are continuous on the MVT and are not on 4MR, so I guess that provides a clearer indication of who has the right of way. I agree that moving the sign to the airport side of 4MR would make it even more clear.

I also took a closer look this morning. The sign is about 6 inches from 4MRT, and 2.5 – 3 feet from MVT. There’s also foliage on the outside side of 4MRT that could at times obscure the yield sign. It’s definitely not ideal, but does not appear overly confusing.

ParticipantThis problem generally solves itself for me, as anyone continuing on the MVT has much more pace than I do coming up the incline from 4MRT.

ParticipantYesterday morning about 6:50, I got caught at Columbia Dr, waiting to cross from 4MR to W&OD. Another cyclist was also waiting at the light and a pedestrian arrived shortly thereafter. When the traffic light turned red for Columbia, as we got the walk signal and started to cross, an Arlington Parks truck on Columbia did not stop at the light, but proceeded to turn right onto the W&OD, cutting off the three of us who had the right of way. Unfortunately, it is not just the out of town tourists and drunks that you have to worry about on the trails! Be careful out there.

ParticipantThanks to the tourist family that decided to have a conversation with another family, while facing the center of the sidewalk leading to the Lincoln Memorial!

Why hadn’t I thought of using 1/3 of the sidewalk just for hand gestures alone? What really made this moment special was the mother’s response to me asking “can you please try to share the sidewalk?” She said “bite me.” I think she may have been a Bart Simpson fangirl.

ParticipantYou: Most drivers who veer onto 15th street from Clarendon Blvd.
Me; Just trying to get to work without getting killed.Use a *&%##!#$%^& turn signal!
I was told years ago that this little section of 15th street was going to be removed.

I agree with your frustration. Take the driving lane here rather than the GREEN bike lane. That way the drivers can’t do this to you.

While I completely feel your pain, I have also altered my route home to avoid the paths near the Lincoln. It is tourist hell, with tourons engaging in random crazy ivans just to ensure that there no american subs on their heals. It is a known dangerous gauntlet.
Consider crossing on the 14th Street bridge or consider going down the sidewalk on Independence rather than on the paths going to the memorial.
As much as I dont want to be near cars…. I also dont want to be near tourons.

ParticipantHi, huge chrome lugnut from a truck or bus halfway embedded in the asphalt in the bike lane on Fairfax Drive in front of the Ballston station. That’s not where you belong.

ParticipantMe: On the W&OD riding westbound on the climb up to Vienna on Saturday morning, approaching and about to overtake 3 guys riding single-file once there was room anyway.
You: You and your friend tried passing me and the other guys, but due to oncoming traffic your buddy slotted just in front of me (there was just space for one bike between me and the 3 ahead of me) and you moved to the right of the yellow line just alongside me forcing me to ride double-file with you.
Couldn’t you just have waited and passed us when there was no oncoming traffic and not squeezed me to the right? When I said you shouldn’t have done so, you replied “this is how you pass on the W+OD.” Not how I pass buddy.

ParticipantAs a collective missive–
Dear Rt. 1 traffic,
I recognize your need to get home, but please forgive me when I attempt to cross your racetrack by proceeding with the green light. Contrary to your belief, your red light is not a signal to accelerate harder, nor is it a signal to slow down and fail to stop. Oh, and, you’re welcome for me waiting for the countless number of you who seem oblivious to traffic signalling devices. (To the rest of you, thank you for attempting to follow the law).

Sounds like someone needs to get The FogĀ® treatment.

ParticipantA little late to this one, but the Independence sidewalk is really just a minor improvement – still full of Admiral-level Crazy Ivans and random kids squirting out from behind trees, shrubs, and larger children.
