To reach drivers in real time you need to find a way to text it to them!

I’m beginning to think that carrying little cards explaining cyclist rights is a good idea; I could hand them out to drivers who are ignorant of the law. *sigh*
The recent PAL advertisement in the Arlington newspaper was nice but I think a similar ad explaining the law to drivers about cyclist rights would be even more useful. I wish we could get such PSAs on TV to reach the broadest audience.
I’ve been driving all week as I’m finally beating down a nasty head cold. I got quite the earful from a guy about not turning right across a cycletrack when cyclists were coming with the right of way and the light. It’s amazing how many d-bag drivers exist. I generally avoid all things phone when driving, but if it’s standstill in rushhour, I may start recording these people to post online for all the people who say drivers are angels.

Well, we could almost do that if we stuck PSAs on the backside of buses. Better yet, PSA announcements on the pumps at gas stations. Everyone has to fill up at some point….
Hmmmm…..could be an idea for an Exxon PR campaign? BP??? heavens knows they need it.

ParticipantThere’s a “Bicycles May Use Full Lane” sign on Idylwood pretty near the Virginia Lane spot. Maybe they need one here as well.
Because: Bicycles May Use Full Lane, that’s why…

ParticipantTo the gent coming in to Marshall, VA who let me know he was going to pass with a good five second horn blast, thanks for the notice! I didn’t really understand the purpose of the obscene hand gesture after you went by though.

I wish I had that guy. This morning I had the silent Prius pull within a few inches of me while I’m going down a hill and can’t hear anything. To make matters worse, they seemed to pace me rather than pass or stay behind and I was taking the lane! Backroad adventures, always so much fun.

Priuses (Prii??) scare the living daylights out of me for just this reason. They are so silent I never know where they are or what they plan on doing.

Exactly. I support the National Federation for the Blind’s whole DOT requirement they want that the cars produce some audible noise. I mean literally I hear other cyclists, but on a nicely paved road these guys are like predators on the Discovery Channel that just suddenly pop up on their prey out of no where.

You’ve never had OneEighth come up behind you. Completely silent if he so chooses, and deadly to boot.

ParticipantTo the dude who was riding northbound on the shoulder of I395 (near Shirlington, I guess) in the rain, without a helmet (I was on the express bus southbound):
You are a braver man than I am. Brave as in insane.

ParticipantYou: all the people on the Custis sidewalk in Rosslyn with extra large umbrellas
Me: cyclist slowly descending, trying to get to work, enjoying the nice morning and the fact the rain was stopping, signalling all of my passes. Please, control your silly umbrellas.

ParticipantThe Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Act (signed into law in Jan. 2011) requires that hybrid manufacturers add an artificial noise to the cars to help warn pedestrians of the approaching vehicle. But I don’t think this applies to vehicles released before the law was passed and signed by the President. So all of the hybrids and electric vehicles produced before early 2011 will continue to be silent, unless the manufacturers or the government decide to retrofit those older cars with noise generators.

So the 4-way stop example in the video shows a car ignoring the right of way of the pedestrian (who admittedly should have been looking). Ugh

ParticipantDear Falls Church jogger in the rain with the golden retriever and the marathon number temp tattoo’d on your leg.
If you’re going to yell at me for not calling out a pass, you would do well to not zig-zag from one side of the path to the other without checking behind you first. I tried twice to call out which side I was passing on, only to have you veer in front of me to avoid a puddle before I could do so (first time Left, 2nd time Right). By the time you’d gotten your sh*t sorted out, I was unavoidably right on your heels – nothing I could do, really.

ParticipantI was surprised by the number of joggers that were all over the trail today. One in Rosslyn was jogging straight down the left side of the Custis. I guess they thought no one else would be out in this glorious spring rain.
