Definitely not defending the dad, but yesterday I was showing one of my research assistants the cover of a report on cycling that was produced in Belgium. You can see it here [it’s a pdf]. I can’t imagine even seeing something like that in the US today.
The pdf shows exactly the position the girl was in, minus the other two sitting children. I’m sure the dad was thinking, “I’m never in a million years going to crash if I do this, and I know my daughter will be perfectly safe since I’m in front of her!”

Only because Terpfan doesn’t know me that well… if it had been you there would have been no question.
Wait, that was really you there? Somehow I doubt you were blowing through the stop sign. I’ll try calling out to you then if it really was you next time I go by.

You folks don’t know me at all do you? NO NO NO…. I’m the DB that stops at every light and complains about cyclists that don’t! I quote:
“I’m not a dbag about saying everyone should stop at every stopsign”

Exactly. Read terpfan’s message carefully, everyone. If Dickie had been the stop sign runner, he’d have been an “elite (sic) ahole.” Instead, Dickie is a dbag. Which we already knew anyway. Have you met the guy?

Haha. I meant more the stop signs along Union or ones on the MVT. (poor choice of words on my part). I slow for every stop sign and if traffic is present, I stop. But I am a believer in the Idaho stop scenario. I will admit I do not stop for the two stop signs on Union that don’t have an intersection crossing from the east because there doesn’t seem any point there (unless a pedestrian is crossing) and I do not stop for the stop signs on the MVT by the airport or marina unless vehicles are present.

ParticipantYou: my Topeak Alien II multitool that I’ve had forever.
Did you decide to go look for my blinky light somewhere on the W&OD? If you find it, will you both please come back?

You: One of the many people who came to my aid, offering glue, patches, even CO2 cartridge (feeling sorry for me with my little mini-pump).

ParticipantTwo missed connections today, one involving me:
1. Don’t pull out in anticipation of a light turning green – just wait. Why? Because cars sometimes run reds at the end of their cycle. I watched (waiting patiently for the green) as a cyclist pulled out just before the green and almost got hit. A car was coming from the far lane, blocked from his view by a truck that had stopped for the red, and ran the red.
2. A cyclist passes me on the left and immediately cuts in front of me to cross onto the sidewalk on the right. Boneheaded move. Pay attention. But you said sorry, so it’s cool. Just learn from it.

ParticipantME: The guy slowly easing back into commuting, slowly huffing and puffing his way under the Whitehurst Freeway in Georgetown.
YOU: The guy wearing an air cast on his foot STILL passing people (not just slow old me) like a champ. You, sir, are a machine.

ParticipantTo the two idiots racing each other on the W&OD heading west bound around 3:00 pm….especially the nimrod wearing the BikeArlington jersey!
1) At least the older gentleman that was crushing you called his pass before he blew by me doing 30+ MPH
2) You didn’t even bother to call your pass nearly clipping me and the lady in front of me…. thank god your were spitting your lungs out or I would have had no warning at all
3) You’re an embarrassment to the jersey, either remove it and never put it on again, or learn a little respect for others on then trailBTW, there is a speed limit on the trail
