Fit men riding shirtless was a rather alarming feature on some of my first “group” rides. Proteus herd is a mixed lot. KL, there were just a couple of them and neither shows up for the group rides anymore. But you never know. You might want to come on some Proteus rides. :)

I was thinking more in terms of ME wanting to ride shirtless in this heat.* Good looking bods would just be a bonus.

*Trust me – you don’t want to see me do this – ever.

People who exercise shirtless are just people who have lots to learn about wicking fabrics.

    Yesterday morning
    You (passing): morning rider!
    Me: morning!
You (passing another cyclist in front of me): morning rider!
Me: oh that’s nice, he’s bring friendly as he passes.
You (passing a jogger): morning rider!
    Me: Wha?

Maybe “morning rider” is his cool nickname/screenname/handle, and he’s announcing himself as he passes.

My first call-out goes to the speed racer who decided to pass a jogger around a blind curve just south of the Belle Haven Marina. Lucky for you, I was alert and slammed my breaks while skidding right a little. Otherwise I suspect we both would have had a little trip to Inova. Do me a favor, wait the extra 3 seconds or speed up a little, but don’t endanger me just for yourself. Perhaps it was just an error in judgment and we all make those, but I hope it’s not a pattern.

My second call-out goes to the poor cyclist passing me by the power plant. I never ride behind it, but I felt like a leisurely ride this morning. When I ran across the 5 foot black rat snake slithering along the retaining wall, I stopped to take a photo. You didn’t realize what I was doing and so you looked at me. I should have warned you, but about the exact second you figured it out is when the snake also struck at you. Thankfully, between an elite quick turn and it not being able to judge that speed, it missed.

Funny, I bet every woman on the forum knew exactly what you meant. Interesting how the men thought otherwise.

Last summer, I took to pre-soaking my shirts with water before starting off on a ride. That way I could start taking advantage of evaporative cooling about 3.8 seconds earlier than if I’d had to wait to soak them with my sweat.

(though, yeah, I knew what kathy meant, too)

Probably since we have cultural approval to ride shirtless, we can’t imagine that someone would want to. :-) Maybe at the beach or on the way home from the pool, but otherwise?

Me: Biking along and approaching joggers from behind or head-on.

You: Jogging with that awkward side-to-side motion (or perhaps pivoting just your lower legs outward as you run).

Me: My knees start aching in sympathy every time I see such a thing. Luckily I can ride past and resume bodily happiness.

There was one guy who was wearing basketball shorts over his bike shorts…I get that people sometimes don’t like to be “exposed” like that. But then to go shirtless? No comprendo.

You: Couple walking three abreast with your dog on the corkscrew of death near Lyon Village.
Me: Guy who diligently braked and hung out behind you until the end of said corkscrew of death.

First of all, I’m not some “a@@hole” trying to sneak up on people, I explained that I was following you since you were walking three abreast on a crazy section of trail with some fellow “a@@holes” trying to ascend. Second, “my f@ggy friends in spandex” aren’t trying to harass you by calling their passes, they are just calling their passes – it is called being polite. Third, I hope you treat your dog better than you treat people. Finally, while I know real men dutifully grind their hindquarters raw wearing denim on their bikes, I’m just not ready for that level of discomfort – so spandex for now!

Yesterday was all about snakes and their modeling debut? I was just about to stop for a cyclist squatting for a shot (nice SLR and lens!) on the Paint Branch when he sees me and waves me through …. towards the 3′ or 4′ black snake making his way across the trail (probably a racer – i noticed a lighter belly). I opted for a short cyclocross detour instead.

I saw one on the Cross County Trail on Saturday; not to scare all of you NoVa Epic-ers.

I bunnyhopped many snakes when I used to live in Tysons and ride Wakefield/Accotink after work a lot. Most of the ones you’ll see are harmless. Its more of a problem in Frederick, with the extensive timber rattler population.
