If anyone is looking to ALSO have a 10 miler on April 7, I’ve got an entry up for grabs. Just doesn’t work for me, this year. It’s a great race, and I’ll be back. Just not this year.

To the guy riding the bright orange single speed in Balston this morning:
I am sure when your bike was a fixie the unwrapped bars and no brakes made some sense, but once you converted it into a coasting single speed you probably should have installed some way of stopping… it was pretty horrifying watching you go through red light after red light this morning, wondering which Arlington bus driver was going to paint another cyclist icon on his door. Plus, those un-wrapped bars must have been pretty chilly today. I hope you made it to your destination safely.

I saw him yesterday. I believe that shade of orange is called “Day-Glo.”

This is a “mostly missed” connection that perhaps should be addressed as an open post to tourists:

My left handlebar barely made contact with your right elbow as I turned as quickly as I could out of the way. I appreciated your apology and I think you appreciated me asking if you were alright. And I’m glad we were both alright– I chalked it up collectively to bad luck. However, the truth of the matter is that it’s extremely dangerous to walk across Pennsylvania Avenue against the illuminated orange don’t cross sign. The obvious reason for this is so that the traffic that has the green light for a good five seconds when you decided to dart across won’t hit you. The less obvious reason is so that the cyclist following the lights with a big tourist bus to his right won’t hit you. The lucky side for both of us is that I incessantly imagine the worst case scenarios so I slowed down thinking the bus was trying to make an illegal left turn. While I didn’t consider the fact that someone had run in front of him a good five seconds into the green light hence the real reason he had encroached into the bike lane. Either way, it didn’t matter since i had slowed down anyway.

It could have turned out far worse.

Also, this could be a public service announcement that tourist season is almost back into full swing :(

WHAT IN THE $&#% is it with 15th St NW and left turns on red? To the cabbie who saw the green straight arrow at S then just turned left like there wasn’t a giant red arrow pointing left staring in his face – I KNOW you heard me yell (though you probably didn’t hear me call you an a*%&ole because I did that quieter).

Then to the oblivious Maryland Honda driver who turned from Florida onto 15th – just because it’s one way doesn’t mean you can turn left on red. You can NEVER turn left on red in DC. That’s a little PSA from me to you. And I know this because my wife just let her DC license expire for too long and had to retake the written exam and that little nugget of legality was in there.

Is it time for happy hour yet?

Yesh, yesh it is in fact.

I am going to miss the cold weather. Days like today with open roads and Mups will change into ‘Which way is the little dog on the 20 foot leash or the 22 month old on the 4 wheel roller thingy going to go while the owners are engrosed in their cell phones?”

I won’t. I have discovered this winter that I’ve gone totally soft; I can no longer hack the cold weather and have turned into a wuss.

Maybe it’s habitual wussiness and I need to get my Rule V mojo back.

Since we’re on the topic: I’ve got an entry for the Parkway Classic April 21 that I can’t use. Anyone want it?

Most people don’t even know that turning left on red from a 1-way street to a 1-way street is legal in Va. and Md. But not, as you note, in DC. This adds yet another complication to our never-ending quest for perfect knowledge of traffic laws.

Yeah, I figured it would be different in at least one of VA and MD.
