Whats worse than almost getting run over on the street?
THIS.
Sometimes bollards are necessary.

ParticipantYou: The rider patiently waiting on the north end of the Memorial Bridge tunnel for a runner to make it through last night.
Me: The bonehead that tried to sneak through on the heels of the runner but too far behind.
You: You gave me a wag of the finger, probably less than I deserved. My bad. I apologize.

ParticipantYou: Couple riding together on W&OD near East Falls Church
Me: The jerk who yelled at you when trying to pass you.
Putting it mildly, I was a jerk. You guys were just trying to ride together, and though you weren’t single-file, there wasn’t any reason for me to shout so angrily. I should have just called my pass again in a normal way, rather than going ballistic.
I have no idea if you’re on the forum or not, but just in case, I wanted to apologize here in addition to the on-the-trail apology. Sorry for being an a$$!*le.
I hope I didn’t ruin your ride.

Remember that “collards” only damage bike tires.
Then we should invent some that only damage car tires.

ParticipantYou: Maryland plated vehicle, parked (not dropping off) in the bike lane in front of Swanson MS.
Me: The cyclist who had to ride into the travel lane, and then proceeded to glare at you and shake my head as I passed.
You’re lucky your window was up, otherwise I’d have yelled at you; not so much because you parked in the bike lane, but because you parked there instead of parking in the open spot that was immediately adjacent to your vehicle. Seriously, instead of leisurely pulling into the spot that was 3 CARS LONG, you just pulled up alongside that big open spot and sat in the bike lane, not only blocking the bike lane, but also blocking other cars from being able to get into those spots. W.T.F.

I think I would have stopped, knocked on the window, and said “feeling entitled today????”

ParticipantYou: Eastbound on the custis this morning on a black, blue, and white pinarello (nice!)
Me: Also eastbound on a black kestrel
You were super nice, safe, and courteous with your passes this morning. You passed me after the bridge that goes over the exit on 66, but I kept up with you until you turned, presumably to take the west side of the key bridge into the city. You waited to pass when there was oncoming traffic. You called all your passes. And you were nice about it. I thought about coming alongside to chat, but there was too much traffic.
Thank you!

Do you have a splashguard on your Kestrel? I was passed by a couple of courteous folks on the Custis this morning, and the guy in the read was on a black, somewhat Kestrel-looking bike and I seem to remember it having a splashguard on the back. Didn’t notice what the first bike was. I was plodding along on my Bianchi, wearing a yellow jacket.

ParticipantNo splashguard on that bike. When it rains I ride the bike in my avatar pic – a 1986 Centurion Le Mans that has fenders on it.
My Kestrel is black with white lettering. I was in my rain jacket this morning to head off the wind – which worked out quite well! I just had to add a t-shirt to my normal long-sleeve t-shirt.

One of the more ballsy things I’ve ever seen a cyclist do was block a motorist who tried to use the W&OD between Maple and Church street as his personal “traffic escape route” (Maple was backed up, so he seemed to figure he could drive up the W&OD real quick to get to Church). A cyclist coming the other way refused to let him through. The dude was shrieking that he was almost to church, and it would be easier to go forward than back up, and mister ballsy cyclist flat out refused to move. After a few minutes of engine revving and yelling, impatient driver dude ended up backing up to Maple (he had quite a crowd at this point).
It was awesome.
