Screaming “Sorry” inaudibly from inside your car is great and all, but maybe next time try checking to your right, merging into the bike lane, and THEN making your right turn.
Or a simple turn signal. Just signal, and I’ll hold up or go around to your left, FFS.

Sure, although that doesn’t work when we arrive at the stop sign at pretty much the same time.

ParticipantGuy standing in the dark on the side of the trail: “Say, that’s quite a light!”
Me: “I need it because you don’t use one.”

ParticipantWaiting at a red light this morning downtown. Old guy in a red corvette waiting to turn left pulls up just to the edge of the intersection (but not into it). As his light turns red and mine green, I see two cyclists proceed through the intersection in front of him. Well, he decides he’s going to make that left and comes a foot from hitting one of the cyclists.
Lesson for drivers: if you’re going to do the pull-up-and-turn-left as the light turns thing, do it. Go all the way into the intersection so you’re clearly in front of opposing traffic and it can’t possibly get in front of you first. Be predictable.
Lesson for cyclists: watch out for idiots.

ParticipantEvidently, it is a capital offense for a cyclist to cause an SUV to change lanes in order to pass. At least that’s what I think he was trying to tell me between the curse words and name-calling while he passed, and again while I was along side him at the red light.
So much anger…

Just in case the previous 4962 posts in this thread hadn’t made that lesson abundantly clear already.

ParticipantMe: Riding into the sunset down M st SE enjoying the open road.
You: Two cars on the side up ahead and one taxi coming the opposite direction.
Maybe there is competition between uber drivers and taxis to pull in front of vacant sidewalks, or maybe you had to prove to each other you can turn left like Zoolander. In either case, just because you see an open road does not mean you all three should pull simultaneous crazy Ivan U-turns from 2 converging directions at the exact moment I am riding past……Besides, it was the bottom of the hour, you should have turned to starboard instead (Red October).

ParticipantA coworker told me that yesterday, while he was waiting for the light at Ft. Meyer Drive inbound on the Custis, a cyclist passed him and shouted “In Virginia, cyclists don’t have to wait at red lights.” As he blew the light, a car that he couldn’t see because of the trees came through, and they both had to make avoidance maneuvers. I wish I had actually witnessed this; it’s not every day you get to see moronic cockiness suitably rewarded.

Possibly misunderstanding the two minute rule?
Otherwise very odd – we at BPAC are still tossing about the idea of requsting the City ask the General Assembly to legalize bikes proceeding through on leading pedestrian intervals (as is legal in the District).

I didn’t realize that was legal in DC. Good to know.

The police don’t seem to know it either.

ParticipantYou: 30-ish blonde with glasses and a pony-tail right by the off-ramp from George Washington Memorial Parkway to Memorial Drive.
Me: Scantily-clad tearing through the whips of wind on this cool Autumn morning emblazoned by the rising sun.
When our eyes met, I could sense the attraction immediately, you crept closer and never looked away. We made eye contact up until…….. I needed to remind you that you are sitting in a mid-sized SUV and I am clipped into a road bike at high speed with the right-of-way. I’m not interested in our crossing paths again, no hard feelings, I hope this message finds you well.

ParticipantYep, you ran a red light from a full stop at 35th…oops – 34th… & M St, NW today. We are pleased no one was injured by your negligence.

ParticipantYou: Me running late Tuesday morning, deciding topping off the tires could wait.
Me: changing a pinch flat in the rain and dark just off the TR bridge Tuesday evening. 😡

I cross this intersection during rush hour every day. There is a reason why I go through the crosswalk on foot and not on my bike…
