ParticipantYou on Friday: W&OD guy with brown coat and big hat, walking a little dog and a medium dog, both off leash.
Me on Friday: struggling with slow-speed evasive maneuvers around your little dog, who is excitedly coming to visit me on my bike, “Really? Really!? Your dogs are supposed to be on leash!”You today: same guy, same part of the trail, same dogs, this time with little dog on a leash.
Me today: “Well, you’ve got one leash going. That’s a start.” 😡Dude, the leashes are to keep other trail users (and your own dogs, incidentally!) safe. Use them. (I wonder if he even realizes that was our second interaction. Probably not.)

ParticipantNice missed connection with a cabbie on M St (I know!) who shifted right and stopped kind of suddenly, heard my loud brakes squealing, and apologized. That was really nice, especially considering I was just following him a bit close and he didn’t actually do anything wrong.
Then some clown tried to turn left through me as I went left from PA to L at that awful uphill four lane sprint to not get killed before you reach the relative (and boy do I mean relative) safety of the L St cycletrack. He gave me a look like it was somehow my fault that nearly killed me when I had the right of way.
Ahh, I sure have missed biking downtown in the vicinity of rush hour. So much.

Participant(I wish I had) missed the pothole in the dark and rain. Dipped the front wheel in a deep pothole and was happy that it did not splat. pinch flat or taco a wheel. Get to work and notice my Edge 1000 flopping around on the mount. 😮 Seems I busted one of the mounting ears. Grrr now I have to see if Garmin will sell me an entire back.

They sell a package with the mounting paraphernalia.

ParticipantThat is the ticket. Ordered one soon after I posted. Looks like a real good fix to a real problem that Garmin has not attended to. I liked how sleek and flat the 1000 is in a K-edge out front and the replacement back would retain that. The dog ear kit adds a bit of stack but it is a true one and done fix. (After 30 min of on hold Garmin parts I was cured of the desire to buy from them too).

You’d think given the prevalence of the problem that they’d just throw a couple of spare backs in the box.

ParticipantMe: Riding on the trail in Rock Creek Park (about about 6:50 am)

Why would you think it’s smart to do pushups on the trail? Especially while it’s still dark out. You’re lucky I have a good light or you would have suffered an atomic wedgie.

At the very least, I think his workout would have been tainted.
I’ll show myself out.

ParticipantSituation: Classic right hook x5
Location: Sunnyside Avenue, Beltsville MD
Perpetrator: FedEx delivery truck
Time: Approx. 10:18am Saturday January 21
Description: A group of five of us were out for a fun casual ride this morning, heading out to the farms north of Greenbelt. We were traveling east along Sunnyside Ave single file, close but not really pace line. A FedEx delivery truck overtook us, we weren’t really going fast, and neither was the truck. He probably took 15s or so to over take all 5 of us, plenty of time for him to notice us. I was leading the group. As we crossed the tracks, he turned right into the WMATA rail yard, as I was beside him, no further than 5 feet back. Fortunately we were all going fairly slow and able to slam the brakes to avoid. There were five very loud cursing cyclists at that one, fortunate that we didn’t hit him, and fortunate that we didn’t pile up on each other. I didn’t get the license plate, but have time and location. Very much considering calling FedEx to complain, but doubt it would do any good. -
