ParticipantTo the passhole who buzzed me last night without warning: I suppose all the reflective bits on your tights are good for you to be seen, but don’t you think you should get a light so that you can actually see as well as be seen? Especially if that’s how you normally behave on the trail.

Not to mention that reflective bits work only if the other person has a light.
This reminds me of the traffic customs in Mexico, as my sister (who lives there) explained them. When driving on windy roads at night, you keep your headlights off, so you’ll see the other guy’s headlights better. Yeah, doesn’t work so well if both of you follow that custom.

ParticipantAt about 8:45 this morning, I was on the sidewalk on the east side of Ohio Drive heading from the Waterfront to Haines Point. When I got to the crosswalk that allows pedestrians and cyclists to cross Ohio Drive and go past the Jefferson Memorial, I saw an unusual sight. There was a car stopped in the crosswalk on the wrong side of Ohio Drive (westbound lane heading eastward) and a cyclist who had apparently swerved to miss him not expecting a car in the wrong part of Ohio Drive. Several other cyclists had caught up to him behind him so I saw no need to get involved.

Whoa, I saw the same thing!
It was the same group of cyclists that rode in a little pace line and passed me on 14th St. Bridge earlier. Almost all of them were polite and friendly as they signaled their passes and greeted me in passing.

So they were actually all together. Interesting.

The Thursday morning Hains Point group is generally a bunch of great people that say good morning and provide warning of the approaching peloton. The Thursday night NCVC crowd are also generally great. The other Thursday night peloton though…

I was part of the group of six cyclists. We were riding from Alexandria, headed to the Anacostia River Trail. As you can see from the video, the driver had turned into the wrong lane. Our lead rider was looking to the left and was not expecting a car from the right. Fortunately, one of our riders called out in time time for the lead rider to stop.

I was having a hard time visualizing this just based on the text description, despite riding this section almost every day. Score one for action cams!

To piggyback off Casey’s post, it’s important to consider that the signage could have been confusing to the driver.
I mean, this is what the driver was looking at just before they made their right turn:
Clearly they need better signage so this doesn’t happen again.

I never was a good writer.
That must be me who appears on the far sidewalk after the car stopped.
Edit: I wonder what the driver was thinking since as the Street View picture shows, besides for the signage, he had to make a very sharp turn.

ParticipantTo the driver of the semi cab: thanks for blasting your horn to let the people approaching the crosswalk—and the people in the crosswalk at the time—know that you had no intention of slowing down—let alone stopping—for anyone or anything. The sound also let everyone in a wide area know what a total asshole you are. I can only hope the sound didn’t disturb the phone conversation you were having during the whole episode! 😡 Do everyone a favor: go to hell.

I blame the cyclists. Obviously the driver saw them riding north and just assumed that the roadway was northbound as well. The clear solution to driver error is to ban cycling.

I’m guessing the driver hadn’t had coffee yet.
Nice to finally meet you, even if it was in passing. 😎
