Herd of cross fit runners on the W&OD in Vienna this am. All running 2 wide shouldering rucksacks that stick out and extra 1/2 a person while in full on ninja. Oncoming rider’s light made it a real close call between me and the slowest rucker. Perhaps the caboose shows a red light please?

Great minds think alike and so do we! After passing the huffing ruckers I stopped in at their home base. Laid my very best Dirt “let’s not meet by accdent” on the drill Sargent I think they should have some armband type lights hanging next to the door. Put one on as you go out and hang it back up when (if) you get back

ParticipantCab at the Intersection of Doom this morning nosing into the crosswalk while the “No Turn” light was still in effect, then blasting your horn at the incredulous cyclists (plural) you nearly ran over.
I don’t have an Inner Pete. What I do have is a loud voice, a general love and respect for swear words, and the belief that my middle finger is there for a reason. But you know that now.

ParticipantYou: Foot-slogging down the hill in Rosslyn, wearing shades, looking serious. Also, definitely Steve O.
Me: Lots of waving, verbally saying “HI STEVE” enthusiastically.
You: Still definitely Steve O, but unresponsive. So yeah, just wanted to make sure you knew I said “Hi”, Steve O!

You have stop sign, I do not

ParticipantYou: Southbound on the MVT, just passing under the 233 overpass at Reagan National Airport, frantically trying to cover your headlight with what appeared to be BOTH HANDS, and judging by the ensuing cacophony, you took a minor excursion into the grass!!!
Folks, public service announcement: DON’T F@WK WITH YOUR LIGHTS IF YOU CAN’T KEEP YOUR BIKE UNDER CONTROL.
I’m a big boy, and I don’t care if your headlight is bright. I’ve learned how to deal with that. What I don’t want to deal with is some idiot coming into my lane when closing speed is north of 30mph.

ParticipantYou: taking up the bike lane WB on Wilson west of Courthouse early lunchtime. (But hey, it’s okay because your flashers were on. That makes everything legal!)
As I approached and swung wide, you suddenly threw open your door and jumped out, forcing me even further out into the lane. But hey, you smiled at me as you did it, so it’s all way cool!
I hope you understand sign language, but if not, I guess I was loud enough.

ParticipantMe: riding home along the W&OD through solid trail traffic
You: not even waiting for me to finish my pass before passing up my left by about 2″. And then passing aggressively the next several riders I could see, including up the middle between folks riding and running in opposite directions with very little to spare — one person had to go off trail to avoid a collision you would’ve caused — and then passing someone well over into the oncoming lane up the blind part of the Brandymore Castle, where you were not visible to oncoming traffic. And topping it off with blatantly running the red light at Washington and the W&OD. Oh, but your rang your bell to call your insane passes, so that makes up for it all.
Sir, you need to slow down before you seriously hurt someone or worse. It is NOT OK to pass up the middle between folks going in opposite directions during a busy rush hour on the trail. It is NOT OK to pass someone who is in the process of passing someone else. It is NOT OK to treat pedestrians and your fellow cyclists like inanimate objects. SLOW THE HELL DOWN.

I saw a cyclist do the same thing you describe here on the down slope, west bound side of the WOD just west of Navy Federal headed toward Vienna. He pushed a pedestrian off the trail with his pass. I apologized to her on his behalf.

This is unfortunately all too common behavior on the W&OD (and I assume on other paths as well). Heck, at least this person used their bell – I sometimes wonder if I missed a memo announcing a prohibition on calling your passes.
Sadly, after a decade of bike commuting along the W&OD, I can absolutely understand why some other trail users would hate cyclists.

ParticipantYes, that’s it, driver of bus full of tourists – stop in the middle of 15th Street and disgorge your passengers so they have to cross a bidirectional bike lane to get to the sidewalk.

I see this almost every day. I’m one of those trail users who hates cyclists.

Please don’t focus your hate on a single group like that. Do what I do and never be disappointed. Like dogs and hate people.:p (Well, sort of. But not the dogs part, they are a Gift to us all)
