I’ve got a Cygolite Trion 1300, the default setting on which is 600 lumens. Normally, when I’m riding on the Capital Crescent Trail at night and see an oncoming cyclist or pedestrian, I swivel my light so it points far to the right (off the trail), to avoid blinding people. But then a couple of days ago, this happened:
Him: Approaches with a light blazing with the light of 1,000 suns.
Me: Swiveling my light so it points more downward toward the trail, but having to keep it directly on the trail so that I can still see the trail when my eyes have stopped being habituated to the darkness due to his light.
Him (as he passes me): “Turn your light down!”Fortunately, I had the presence of mind to call back, “You, too!” (Normally, retorts like that occur to me 10 minutes later, when they do no good.” But seriously, dude, if you know you’re supposed to turn down or cover your light, why aren’t you doing it?
I swivel my light as you do. I find that few people do that. Most who do anything seem to cover their light with a hand which I find rather difficult to do while keeping control of the bike.

Yeah, I sometimes do the hand thing, but it does make it harder to keep control of the bike. And I don’t want to courteously avoid blinding someone, only to knock him or her off the bike due to lack of control.

ParticipantWell Friday morning I loved the guy on the W&OD covering his handlebar mounted light while blinding me with his helmet mounted light, not to mention the light on his front fork. Oh well, nice try.

Some folks seem to have photon issues. I have a repeat flasher dood. I am thinking it might be time to bust out the Vicegrip 20,000 lumen 150 LED array-O-holyLight. (patent pending)

I wonder if he was just trying to be humorous and noting that you covered your light for him and he just wasn’t very good at it.

ParticipantOn Custis this morning, guy jogging toward me with his dog on his left side executes a beautiful hurdle-pirouette move to stay on his feet when the dog Crazy Ivans him to sniff something off the trail on the right.
Dude, for your own health, keep the dog on the right, even though I will miss the entertainment.

ParticipantThat special moment where you lower your butt towards your seat only to have the horn of your seat pop upward.

ParticipantTo all the guys in full kit, riding full carbon everything, and hauling ass on the blind corners of the Custis between Harrison Street and the top of the Glebe Rd. bridge, during the evening rush hour commute… I hope your insurance covers dental work. I hope the person you hit does too. Slow down jackasses… I could do the same, but excerise control of my bike by using the thing called a brake to slow my Zipps.
Love, JorgeGortex

ParticipantNinja passer westbound on the Martha Custis yesterday evening: I guess your Bike Arlington jersey exempts you from being a PAL?

ParticipantMe – announcing my pass to the rider in front and signaling to you, the rider on my wheel, with my hand that I was about to pass
You – ignoring my signals and trying to pass me while I pass the other rider.
Sorry about that elbow I threw and almost running you into the fence. Oops! My bad. But hey! Great bike handling skills. Guess you need them when you ride like a jerk.

As a true classic, it will live forever.

ParticipantEarly this morning westbound on the Custis near the Catholic Church. Thanks for calling your pass, but I’d REALLY appreciate it when after you pass, you actually get around me before merging back into the right lane. If I have to brake and do an evasive maneuver when you pass me it’s not a pass, it’s called cutting me off.
Found connection: Similar area on the Custis – To the 2 ladies walking my direction. Sorry I came up behind you a little fast, but I was using the hill to slow down while trying to conserve momentum as I waited for the oncoming cyclists to clear before passing you. You don’t have to apologize for being there and I hope in our pleasant exchange I was able to get that across.

ParticipantYou: weaving through runners and pedestrians along Roosevelt Island and then whizzing past me (without calling it) on Trollheim, and then crawling along the bridge. [You’re becoming a repeat missed connection btw]
Me: “Your shorts are see-through.”

ParticipantHerd of cross fit runners on the W&OD in Vienna this am. All running 2 wide shouldering rucksacks that stick out and extra 1/2 a person while in full on ninja. Oncoming rider’s light made it a real close call between me and the slowest rucker. Perhaps the caboose shows a red light please?
