The other day I came across a guy who had KOM’d the “Behind the Buildings” segment in Crystal City at 60+mph.
Huh, that’s odd. I should have gotten an email notification if I’d lost that segment.

hozn is #2… you can ask him! My guess is the faster motorized trips have been flagged there. Whoever is climbing Meade – Rhodes westbound (strava segment) at 27 mph is going faster than I think is possible.
That one does get driven up from time-to-time. By accident, I’m sure
Since I have a tied KOM on that particular segment, I get alerted and I just flag them.
Agree with Tim that the Meade-Rhodes segment time looks legit. I’ve never tried to ride that segment quickly, but especially if you were riding with others it doesn’t seem unreasonable to sustain 27mph. (I’m also sure it would be a lot of work.)

Looks like I had my hyperbole hat on but I found the thing again:

Ahh yeah. I missed the key bit about the units. It’s in kph, not mph! Big difference.
Still… Hans, how many CCs on your bike?
I’m pretty sure I had a tailwind that day. And I waited from a ways back for the light to change so that I could get up some speed before the base of the hill. I probably weighed at least 5lbs less than I do now back then too
That said, I find that hill is actually less steep than it looks once you get on it. It’s so short an effort that just sprinting to the top works. It’s the sort of segment that I was pleased to get, but not the sort of thing that I’ll try to reclaim when someone inevitably rides it faster. Someone is always faster.

https://www.strava.com/activities/605848064Probably the fact that it’s not a climb segment is why there’s no KOM notification. (I’m deducing that 0% must fall into Strava’s bucket of negative-grade segments, on which they try to discourage competition.)

https://www.strava.com/activities/605848064I can see the reasoning for logging this as a ride. While it isn’t a bike ride, it IS technically a ride. When starting Strava, you only have the option of choosing to start a bike ride or a run. It’s not until you finish a ride/run that you get more options.
For example, when I go on a hike, I initially select run. When I finish, I have to change it from run to hike. I think there’s a drive option, but I don’t think they have one for a train ride.
It is odd, though, to see someone posting a (train) ride like that!

It’s not even a very fast train…

Not a very good workout, either. In 41 minutes, they only burned 183 calories!

ParticipantMe: westbound on Maine at the Marina
Rider coming up behind me : *ding**ding**ding**ding**ding**ding**ding**ding**ding**ding**ding**ding**ding**ding* but no pass
Me: “….”
Me, five seconds later: “hmmm….maybe it wasn’t the person behind me who dinged?”
Me, 20 seconds later, having disregarded previous dinging: “okay, approaching a pedestrian on my side of the trail, just gonna move left to pa…”
Rider behind me: “PASSING ON YOUR LEFT!” as you bully your way by just as I’m starting to pass the pedestrian

ParticipantAt about 10 AM this morning, I was on the W&OD heading eastbound at the US15 underpass on the east side of Leesburg. At the bottom of the ramp there was a police car blocking the eastbound lane. The policeman was outside of the car looking up the ramp in the direction I was coming from. I slowly crept around him and didn’t say anything as this is a hazardous place even if one lane isn’t blocked. Thankfully, there was no one coming from the other direction. Does anyone know why the policeman was there?
I don’t think that there was a connection, but a bicyclist was changing a tire off the path immediately after going under US15.

ParticipantRiding up Gallows, approaching the W&OD I see a woman on a bike cross Gallows heading east on W&OD against the light. There was traffic (even at 6:20am) but she had just enough time to scurry across. However, the guy in the orange safety vest who followed her did NOT and almost got flattened by a north bound car who had to slam on their brakes. Dude: it’s a red light. That hi-viz safety vest ain’t gonna change that.
Then lots more examples of bad behavior until I fell in behind a woman on a hybrid pedal assist bike at 29 in Falls Church. She called all of her passes, signaled all of her turns, gave right of way to all pedestrians and was a complete pleasure to ride behind (she was my rabbit up hills too). I chit chatted with her a bit and thanked her for being so courteous. She’s my Wednesday hero.

ParticipantI was finishing up a 60+ mile ride this morning on the W&OD trail, and the heat had me feeling exhausted and a little defeated. Just past the EFC metro stop, I came upon a young brother and sister along the side of the trail who, along with their father, were giving out free lemonade to passersby on the trail! (Apparently they had already made a killing selling it around the neighborhood.) I didn’t manage to get their names, but just wanted to say thank you. Not only was it a much needed cold drink, but it lifted my spirits enough for me to push through those last few miles before home.

The kids and their dad are our next door neighbors. I let them know how much you appreciated them!
