For anyone who genuinely loathes getting drafted you can always try the Chrissie Wellington tactic.
FYI–that means peeing on them. Something along the lines of “if they get to close, just give them a warning squirt.”
Now, back to our regular topics and let’s try to keep things family friendly.

With my early and opposite commute plus a pretty decent pace, I rarely get a draft- when I do, and the pace (and rider skill…) matches I’ll leap on it but I always thank my windblock “for the tow.” If they don’t want to be drafted or want me to take a turn a hand gesture usually does the trick.
I will admit that anyone that decides to draft me up the Hunter Mill climb (EB) *might* get a rather wicked pace for their trouble (and yes, I’ll destroy myself in the process)
I usually give a “thanks for the pull”.
But I do the same thing if someone latches on to me. Slowly wind up the speed to see if they can hang on, if they can, get them to come around and start swapping pulls til you both either get to your turn off or blow up whichever comes first. #Cat6since1986

ParticipantDiskbusicuit – Chinese Whispers!
Anyways, I’m fine with drafting and providing drafts. On a separate note, I have never understood the rear view mirror people out there. Worry about what is in front of you!

ParticipantI believe my first post to this forum was an inquiry about the etiquette around drafting strangers on commuter arteries (in my case, the W&OD). I think the consensus was that it is polite to ask before settling in on someone’s wheel.
I had a concern then, which continues to this day, that if it is dark out, I would really appreciate a quick word before you shadow me for four or five miles. I like to know who is around me at all times and it is hard to see in the glare of lights. (I was reassured when I raised the issue that I probably have little to fear from my fellow commuters, and I agree, but we all have our indiosyncracies).

I’m okay with drafting/being drafted, but I will not be adopting that particular tactic anytime soon. I do, however, worry about something similar. I won’t go into detail (this is a family site), but I’ll just share what I tell people about biking and pollution:
When I bike, I do not pollute the air, save for the occasional bit of methane :p

ParticipantDear Mr. Lexus driver,
If you intend on making a right turn, get into the right lane first.

ParticipantTo the cab driver making the U-turn on PA Ave this morning who I yelled at – I’m sorry for using profanity if you’re sorry for the obscene gesture and for the illegal turn that you made even after I loudly suggested you not do it.
I should have been more like Dirt this morning. In my defense, my wife was working from home but locked herself out after delivering Child #1 to school, so I had to go home (after I had already arrived at work and gotten dressed) and then come back to work again. I had a young lady try to turn right through me while she had a red arrow and then other people try to kill me and then more U-turns and road construction and locked up tires avoiding a jaywalker who jumped out from between parked cars and yesterday Sandy debris on 15th street exploded my rear fender again. I think that’s a little bit mitigating.
Still, I got to ride my bike a lot this morning, so that’s good.

ParticipantI was mostly Dirt-like in temperment this morning (even singing on the TR), until I got to the corner outside my building. Then I wasn’t. Oops. No excuses, but pedestrians really should stand on the curb until they get their signal.

And if they’re not going to, for the love of God it would be most helpful if they commited to whatever decision they make rather than hop out, turn around, and turn around again. Predictability is highly underrated!

ParticipantDear My Commute:
I miss you! I haven’t seen you since Friday.
Then there was a hurricane and flooding and then the icky germy people on Metro gave me a cold and now I feel all horribles and I haven’t cycled or run or anything since last week and I really want to go home and sleep for 3 or 4 days. That is all.
Love, Me.

ParticipantTo the lady on the W&OD who was riding home without switching gears because she wanted to see what it was like to have one gear…
You rock.
I hope you had a fun and totally successful ride home!November 2, 2012 at 1:07 pm #954678baiskeli
ParticipantIt’s awesome to have three Capitol Police officers on bikes to escort me through a red light.

I was on a lunch ride and linked up with a few of them headed back into VA from DC on the 14th St Bridge a while back. That was a blast, and crossing the Parkway has never been easier. Drivers stop for men with guns.

Hmmm…now that I’m a Virginian I may have to look into this whole “open carry” thing and see how it affects driver behavior.

I’ve started doing this… I think a SS bike may be next. Just can’t stop the covet.
