You: Deer at side of W&OD at about 6:30 last night
Me: Cyclist pretty focused on trail in the spot of light in front of my bicycle.
    You: Shuffling in the leaves
Me: What is that noise…”Ack!” as you appear in the edges of my light
    You: Just staring.
Me: Thank you for not leaping across the trail at that time. Neither of us would have been happy

Me: taking the lane on Gallows south of where the bike lane ends after being buzzed by a large truck. Gallows is two lanes in each direction so I’m not completely blocking traffic plus it’s rush hour so traffic isn’t even approaching the posted 35 mph speed limit. Also, I only need to take the lane for about a quarter of a mile.

You: showing your displeasure at me taking the lane by repeatedly using your horn for long periods and driving right on my back wheel, making me a little worried that you were going to ram me.

    1. I sped up after you passed me. I may have slowed down on purpose while you were acting like a idiot or maybe my legs were just tired and I found a second wind. Hard to say.

    2. Bite me. I’m allowed to take the lane.

Me: Cruising down the Custis Trail, past the trail counter, and crossing the intersection of doom while having the walk signal — not even the blinking red hand.

You: Impatient Prius driver exiting 66 and heading for Key Bridge.

It is nice that you stopped for a moment but really you should have yielded to me in the cross walk rather than trying to zip in front of me, especially when Arlington’s finest are patrolling the stop looking for just your kind. Hope your little chat with him didn’t make you late for work.

Everyone in northern Alexandria watch out for a D-bag in a BMW with the VA license plate ND 85. The ND is for Notre Dame. The dick gave me just inches during a close pass along Potomac Avenue southbound. While I had the opportunity I decided to confront him when I saw him park along Custis Ave.

He didn’t say anything. Barely acknowledged my existence. Just kinda seemed like a robot. The worst part was, my video camera ran out of memory just a few minutes before this incident so I didn’t record it.

Anyway, F*&k Notre Dame forever. I’ll probably see this dick again as I ride that road often.

To the crossing guard working the intersection of Beauregard St and Sanger Ave:
You rock! After a driver decided they would try to make a left after the light had turned red on Beauregard and the barnes dance crossing had started with as many as 20 schoolchildren and their parents, you masterfully took charge by coming out into the intersection to stop the driver and hold him in place in the middle of the intersection so he wouldn’t try to push through the crowd. Thank you for keeping the kids safe from this dangerous driver!

Backstory on the intersection of Beauregard/Sanger:

    • after Beauregard (2 lanes both ways w/ a left turn lane) gets a red light, all lights stay red as a barnes dance (pedestrian scramble) starts (all directions have “No Turn on Red” signs, and all pedestrian signals show “Walk”)
    • on one side of the intersection is an elementary school, and on the other side are many apartment buildings where many of the schoolchildren live
    • I sometimes pass through this intersection on my way to the Holmes Run Trail during my alternate morning commute

White’s Ferry Breaks Free From Cable, Floats Along Potomac

The ferry service known as White’s Ferry briefly broke free of its cable Friday afternoon, floating about 500 yards down the Potomac River with a dozen cars aboard.

The ferry was tugged back to shore and is now secured at a boat ramp on the Maryland side of the river, authorities said about 4 p.m.

It had broken loose from its cable sometime before 3 p.m., and the current took the ferry and its passengers downstream, authorities said. Boats from Montgomery and Loudoun counties were called to assist at the scene in Dickerson, Maryland.

Everyone was safely removed from the ferry, and no one was injured.

The ferry links Whites Ferry Road in Montgomery County, Maryland, with Whites Ferry Road in Loudoun County, Virginia.

The boat that broke free is the last of 100 ferries that used to operate on the Potomac River, according to the town website for Poolesville, Maryland. The boat is officially named for confederate Civil War Gen. Jubal A. Early, although it’s colloquially referred to as White’s Ferry.

“FERRY IS CLOSED,” read the White’s Ferry Facebook page around 3 p.m. Friday. “Due to technical difficulties the ferry is out of service until further notice. Please check back regularly for updates.”

This morning, I got passed on North Pershing a little too closely (as in maybe 8 inches between my bar and the side of their car) by a white hatch back. While this, unfortunately, is not that uncommon, what made this experience notable was the yellow “3 feet to pass” bumper sticker on the rear of the car.

    6:30pm yesterday

You: driving westbound on 2nd St S
Me: riding a CaBi northbound on S Irving St, approaching the stop sign at 2nd St S
You: making an extremely aggressive left turn onto Irving (much too fast and tight while using the oncoming lanes)
Me: reacting by veering toward the gutter (at this point I was still maybe 20 feet south of the intersection)
You: noticing me, suddenly braking and swerving onto your own side of the road
You: laying on your horn for the next few seconds as you continued on your way
Me: making painfully clear to anyone within earshot that I am not Dirt

For the record, in addition to the CaBi flashers, I was wearing multiple lights and multiple reflectors, including a strap-on headlamp that was pointed at you the entire time.
