And then there was this guy on Washington St last night:
https://youtu.be/4Bq_CbzAJgIPulls out in front of me at a crawl and then speeds up at a whopping 1mph. I swear, some people just suck. This guy is one of those just suck people.
That vehicle is also half over the curb.

Yes, sounds like a jerk. But to be fair, if you’ve got a light that’s pointing up in the air, covering at the last minute doesn’t really help (one of the reasons I think it’s a silly practice). Is it possible he reacted really badly to your light obscuring the cyclist ahead of you?
Doubt it – he was coming in at an angle that would have obscured my light until he was all the way in his lane, by which point I had my light covered.

I didn’t even notice that until I rewatched for it. Now I wonder if the guy was drunk.

ParticipantDude in the Subaru going west on I St. toward South Capitol St.
Yep. I was taking the lane because as usual someone parked in the bike lane in front of the apartments. Interesting that you felt the need to race around me giving me much less than 3 ft at that spot. The light at South Capitol was red, and you immediately had to stop for the line of traffic that backed up past McD’s. I hope you realize you were acting like a douche, but I doubt it. That’s why I let you know to be doubly sure. Best part is, given how far back you were in the traffic and how backed up the ramps to 395 were, I highly doubt you even made it through the next green light.

ParticipantRunner gesticulating to me to move Left while he was heading East in the Right(Wrong) lane of the W&OD. You looked very annoyed with me when my confusion with your desire to remain in the wrong lane caused me to hesitate a bit before my moving to the other wrong lane. I hope my “Good Day Mate!” helped a bit.

If he was in the legally street and he was running against traffic, he was doing it correctly.

Quite right. Added location for clarity. Peds on the street bother me not. Plenty of room for unique thinking.

LOL. Yes. I’ve had similar interactions before, usually on the Custis near the Marriott. Oh Marriott, why oh why can’t you just tell people to stay right? And Arlington, why oh why can’t you simply paint some symbols to make it clear?

I’d love to see better markings on the MUPs to indicate where traffic should be. I think many peds think it’s a road, so they should be doing the counter-flow thing. It is a road, just one for peds and cyclists to be traveling in the same direction.

When I overtake someone walking on the left side of the path, instead of just ringing my bell or calling out “On your right” (as opposed to “On your left”), I usually call out “On your WRONG side!”
Interestingly (or, TBH, not) I don’t think I’ve ever encountered someone headed towards me in the wrong lane. If/when I do, I guess I might say something like “Wrong Lane!”

I’ve seen it happen a few times a month, always right by the Marriott. In some other cities, paths are divided for peds/cyclists, not east/west. FWIW, I don’t think I’ve ever changed behavior when I’ve said something while passing. But when I’ve stopped and spoken with them (i.e. at a light), being nice about it, assuming they just don’t know, I’ve gotten thanks.

ParticipantYou: Cyclist on Royal St headed south around 5 pm (red shirt, silver fenders, red light on back but little else stood out)
Me: Car behind you the whole way.Stopping at every stop sign/light. Keeeping up with cars between blocks. Staying aware of traffic in front and behind. Predictable, alert, lawful to a T. What is this madness? If every cyclist rode like this I dare say we’d be a lot more welcome around here. I salute you, sir. I hope you are one of us!

Guest#1 Guy on bike heading down the hill on Belle View going the wrong way in the uphill bike lane as I was driving home last night: No, no, a thousand times no, do not do this. If I were on my bike in the bike lane instead of in my car in the car lane at that moment, you’d have been forced head-on into car traffic, or else run into me, what were you thinking?!?!
#2 White van that beep beeeped at me while passing me on my bike a bit later last night: I am honestly not sure if that was supposed to be a “get out of the road, you don’t belong here, asshole cyclist” angry honk or a “hey, lady on a bike, fyi I’m about to pass you” head’s up honk. It seemed a bit drawn out for the polite head’s up, but not quite laying it on enough to properly convey anger. Please work on improving horn communication skills so that I know if I should feel anger or appreciation towards you.
#3 Person in SUV that screamed at me while passing me to (I am not making this up, I had to think about it for a couple minutes to be sure I wasn’t mis-hearing this somehow ) “GET A WHEELCHAIR!!!” um, huh???
ok, I still think I had to have misheard #3, but I’m not sure what sounds like “wheelchair” that I should be getting for myself, please clarify.
Last night was just weird.

I encountered a group of pedestrians from out of town there once. They were talking about the rules of the trail. They had talked themselves into thinking it was anarchy. “There are no rules,” I heard them say. So I explained to them that you simply stay to the right, just like on a street. More than once. It didn’t seem to sink in.
