Actually, wasnt me. I believe I did pass you about midspan on the bridge before you passed the doubled up joggers. I wasnt thinking any particularly clear thoughts other than something like “yikes, that’s gotta be tight.” Trailer was empty wasnt it?
Yarb, it was empty. My spirits fell when I saw all the oncoming traffic and I didn’t even notice who passed me. Hi!

ParticipantGetting chewed out for yielding to you; a slower rider who was half-passing a jogger on 14th st. bridge… tough to swallow that kind of charm so early in the AM. Yes, you’d just waved on two others (who seemed to not care that they were three abreast on a bridge where two-abreast is sketchy)… but I’m not one for putting myself, you AND the jogger at risk.
ARGH!

Definitely saw that this morning lying upside down.
On another unrelated note, who are the rats…ok, protestors, that are sitting on the 15th st cycletrack? They were blocking it yesterday night and they were still there this morning. Since when could they camp on streets?
Another one this AM… poor little ratty! Same spot too… I’m guessing there is a family that enjoys playing chicken with oncoming cyclists…

Or, it could be the BUNNYMAN.

Yah, that was literally just a few feet from the other one. They must be living down near that retention pond because I figure out why else they keep coming out there.

ParticipantTo the huge cloud of gnats along the Potomac River, many of whom I had deadly collisions with and whose dying, tiny bodies stuck to my leg hair and clothing and barely avoided my mouth:
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

ParticipantLast night I was behind a very nice woman, in a lovely violet Pearl Izumi jacket, from the TR Bridge to Rosslyn. At the Lynn/Lee light-of-eternal-waiting, she turned to me and asked if I had rode into the gnats like she had. I laughed — I think she buffered me from the swarms. So thanks, nice lady. I hope the rest of your ride was gnat (and jerk-driver) free.

ParticipantOkay, listen up, jogger who passed me on the Custis at I-66, I was just at the end of a climb up a hill, and I was taking it easy because I had a broken spoke and I wanted to get to the bike shop without ruining my rim. Don’t get any ideas that you’re faster on foot than me on a bike or anything.

ParticipantDude on a mountain bike!
Cycling on the Outer loop of 495!
You were only about a mile from 295N!
I can’t believe you didn’t have a helmet on!

Participantsometime last week:
Me: heading west merging in to the W&OD from the Custis. I slowed for a rider passing through the T junction, I checked left, checked right, merged in, saw you coming eastbound a few lengths out, and overtook the rider in my lane, even ringing my bell.
You: heading east, bikearlington jersey. Shook your head.Did I pass too close, or were you disapproving of my merge in to the Custis? I thought it was all fairly routine and safe.

Ha Ha, I believe that was me…. actually I remember the situation well and it is nice to hear it from your end with an explanation…. much appreciated! To be honest the tiny incident we encountered was simply that, pretty insignificant… but one of many that occurred that day. I think I just lost my “Dirt” calmness and finally reacted. Generally though, I prefer to not pass when another cyclist is approaching simply because you can never account for closing speed and what the rider/runner being passed might do. Even though the trail is plenty wide, I am not comfortable three abreast, but that is just me. Thanks for the thoughtful posting though, glad it was you and not some un-caring bozo!

ParticipantAgreed: I hate it when people pass in “the middle lane”. That’s the sort of thing that sooner or later gets someone (not usually the passer) killed. It’s rare that there’s no opportunity to pass with a clear oncoming lane, though one may have to slow for a bit until the opportunity arises.
