That was the most disgusting thing I think I have ever seen out there, and I have seen lots of boneheaded, idiotic things out there. This post can’t come close to expressing my rage at what I witnessed!
This fills me with rage as one who regularly stops to help people. I’m surprised that someone didn’t chase the jerk down and give him a thrashing.

Unfortunately there are too many people like that. While I haven’t seen that specific situation, I get pretty angry when I see people speed through Gravelly Point, weaving around and barely missing some of the younger children who are on the trail at the moment. Kids dart off suddenly all the time. That’s just what they do. It’s reckless for people to continue at high speed through that area when it’s so crowded. It’s not unusual for the trail to be crowded. Every regular who rides through there knows this.
It’s part of the selfishness of people who think that everyone needs to get out of their way, whether it’s a cyclist on the trail crossing the center line to pass and forcing others to veer off, a red light-running car driver or a pedestrian who jaywalks right into oncoming traffic and strolls along, while mocking drivers who are beeping at her to get out of the road. (I saw this over the weekend. The woman had a red light. She ignored it even though all the other pedestrians waited for a WALK signal. A driver rolled up and stopped for her as she moseyed across 15th St. When the driver beeped multiple times, she just laughed and started saying, “Beep, beep, beep” back at the driver. She was completely in the wrong.)

This is a pretty obvious case of off-season embrocation cream grundle over-application (OSECGOA for short)… all the classic manifestations are there: genital swelling with cerebral atrophy, leading to an increased sense of self-worth, and, of course, bonus eruptus. The only cure…transdental electromicide.

ParticipantMe: CaBi rider behind two cars, southbound on N Garfield St in Clarendon, all of us approaching the 4-way stop at 11th Street N, around 6:30 last night
You: driver right in front of meThe car in front of you navigated the intersection correctly. But then you stayed back and didn’t move up to the stop line. Why? Because apparently a two-second pause is too long to go without texting. I yelled at you to wake up, but you didn’t hear me. So I started to inch forward enough that I could rap on your trunk, but before I had the chance, you momentarily escaped your obliviousness and noticed that the roadway was now clear to move forward.
But that’s all you noticed. You sure didn’t notice the red octagonal sign (which should have been really obvious given that it was the reason we had stopped in the first place!). Nor did you notice the pedestrian who had cautiously entered the near-side crosswalk but who then needed to step back as you blew way past the stop line (before suddenly slamming on your brakes only when you were already more than halfway across the intersection).
One good thing: the pedestrian and I did have the pleasure of exchanging brief remarks castigating you for your inattention.
Drive if you want to drive. Text if you want to text. BUT DON’T TRY TO DO BOTH AT THE SAME TIME.

ParticipantHey, Mr. Commuter Bus Driver – putting on your signal to change lanes is great and all, but you missed the most important part. You have to check to make sure the lane you’re entering isn’t occupied. You tried to run me over not once but twice. I hope I woke up one of your passengers when I smacked the side of the bus, which you didn’t notice. At least you did stop when I yelled.

It’s also illegal to do both at the same time: https://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+46.2-1078.1

Hah, when’s the last time something being illegal ever stopped anyone?

ParticipantDickie and I had a no-five this morning. Figured that fits in this thread.
Also had a couple of closer than I like interactions with wobbly, overly-enthusiastic riders.
But, hey, that’s also part of Bike to Work Day.May 15, 2015 at 2:00 pm #1030133Dickie

ParticipantSaturday in Del Ray, Alexandria on Russell Road near Windsor and Monroe Aves…
You: Two cyclists, casually riding south, up and down the hills of Russell Rd. One of you is pretty far to the right, about 3-4 ft from the curb, the other is ALL the way over to the left near the double yellow lines with about 6 ft between you.
Me: About 4th back in the line of cars waiting to pass you. We were on our way to the emergency vet with a sick dog in the back. I am all for taking the lane when the conditions warrant, and of course if you’re making a left turn you have to be over to the left. BUT – you were not making a left turn, and there’s no reason to take the lane there! In fact, along that stretch, Russell is wide enough that 2 cyclists can ride side-by-side and still leave room in the lane for cars to pass comfortably. As a fellow cyclist I can usually figure out why someone does something that doesn’t make sense to a typical driver, but I absolutely cannot figure out why you did that, besides you’re an asshole. So if you could please explain I’d much appreciate it.

ParticipantMe: Pedaling up Rockville Pike, taking the rightmost lane that was not the lane merging in from 495.
You: Merging in from 495, then yelling at me that I should be on the sidewalk.
That would have been bad enough normally, but a) there is no sidewalk at that point, and b) when I caught up with the guy at the next traffic light and pointed out that there was no sidewalk, he STILL kept yelling, “sidewalk” at me.

Or you could have asked simply, “Why?”
