Us: Dismal, dbb, wheels&wings and I leaving FCCII, riding 2 abreast down a side residential street on our way to the Custis Trail. Downhill grade, not riding slowly.
You: Silver sedan attempting to pass all of us by driving down the wrong side of the road; curve upcoming.
Me: Hearing you, I glance over my shoulder to see you creeping up on my left and exclaim, “What the #$&* are you doing!?”. I put out my hand indicating you shall not pass and move over onto the opposite side, forcing you to back off.
    You: “Honk!”
Me: Thinking, “I’m not going to let you be on my left if and when an oncoming car forces you back into our lane. Get the f*&$ behind us.”
Us: Continuing to the traffic light, red.
    You: “Honk!”
Us: Onto trail/sidewalk down Lee Highway. Good riddance. Hope we didn’t make you late for your red light this morning.

Similar thing happened to me on Monday, though in my case, there was no curve: an SUV couldn’t turn from a side street into my lane (because I was in it!), so it turned into the oncoming traffic lane, right along side me. Seeing oncoming traffic (duh!), it started creeping over on me, and I did the now patented, Steve-O-throw-the-hand-out maneuver, and yelled “back off!” Seemed to work. I didn’t get a honk, and no one got smashed into. Crap like that shouldn’t happen, though; that’s just stupid.

Aw, little girl, did your parents rent you a pony ride on the Bluemont Junction/W&OD?

    Why, yes, they did.

As I was waiting at the NB light at Florida and 11th NW:
The bad: You pulling out of a parking space on 11th NW, u-turning through the bike lane and both car/bike lanes to park in the opposite bike lane

As I struggled to haul the kids up the hill into the wind to pass you:
The good: A black Mercedes with Maryland tags waited for me to go around. I was almost too surprised to wave my thanks.

CaBi restocking driver rolled down his window on Sherman NW to tell me my daughter on the back of the Xtracycle was reaching out and trying to touch cars as we passed. The little brat. We will redouble our efforts to explain to her exactly how badly things will go if she ever manages to touch something at 20mph.

You: person in a nondescript sedan thing, on Fairwood lane.
Me: cyclist, on bicycle, same location

I was just tooling along at a decent clip. You tried to overtake me, then had to slow down for a speedbump, and then had to back off and tailgate me instead.

Hey, if your chariot’s 4 cylinders powered by explosions can’t keep up with my two fleshy cylinders powered by Snickers bars and joy, what good is it? Furthermore, did you notice me catch air on the next speedbump? This is fun you could be having right now!

You: Hundreds of you on I-66 in various motorized cages, all the way out to Sycamore–maybe farther, crawling along towards DC
Me: Riding my bike on the parallel Custis trail, with semiregular opportunities to observe you.
You: Under the parking deck on I-66. Waiting…moving forward…waiting…moving forward…waiting
Me: Moving right along, enjoying the crisp morning air
You: Crossing over Spout Run. Waiting…moving forward…waiting…moving forward…waiting
Me: Coasting down the Rosslyn Hill
You: On Lee Highway attempting to move eastbound, but mostly standing still.
    Me: Arriving at work invigorated.
    You: Still waiting…moving forward…waiting…moving forward…waiting

    Have a great day!

Not a bad idea. If the cars are close enough for her to touch, they aren’t giving you the legally required 3 feet.

In many instances, I’m the one not giving three feet as I pass cars held up at a light or behind other cars.

Me: cyclist keeping up with traffic, taking the lane, on 7th NW
You: Maroon BMW, expired VA temp tags, passing me with maybe 6″ of clearance

Good thing you got around me. I definitely didn’t tailgate you the entire way down the hill, meaning that your dangerous and illegal maneuver saved you ZERO SECONDS of your precious time. I hope a bird poops on your new car.

You: The fourth manager at Whole Foods on River Road whom I’ve told that the bike rack made of out of recycled plastic is (a) unusable, (b) half-assembled and (c) invariably blocked by parked cars (since the parking attendants have been telling people to park there).

Me: Person cheering my tiny victory at your instructing the parking attendants to stop doing that.

The missed connection is the hundreds of people a day who ride on the Capitol Crescent Trail, a half block away, and who do not stop at your establishment because there’s nowhere to lock a bike.

I’ve complained to the customer service desk about the useability of that rack as well. Obviously not designed by a cyclist. I ended up using a signpost but they are far and few between around there. Perhaps a nice note to headquarters is in order?
