That is the bovine stare I often see in motorists!
Note that a bovine stare is expected with, well, those of the bovine persuasion but shouldnt be observed when piloting a 3000 pound box of steel.

ParticipantMmmm, motorist bourguignon!

ParticipantWell, this was a first for me. Has anyone else witnessed someone “rolling coal?”
Luckily for me, the person didn’t quite do it right as most of the smoke dissipated before it reached me (and my lungs).

ParticipantOnce while riding in Loudon County (Airmont Road I think.)
Somebody tried it while I was riding on a road in Thurmont, MD, and totally failed. I gave him a big thumbs up.

ParticipantMe: riding legally, taking the lane, left arm outstretched in clear left turn signal
You: Lovely gentleman in the silver RAV4 who decided that was the moment to cross a double yellow and zoom past me on the left around a blind corner in a busy residential neighborhoodJanuary 2, 2015 at 7:16 pm #1018294Crickey7

Even when I am going as fast a car.

There’s also a stop sign a block from where he passed me. Then a light, and another stop sign. It’s not like we were on a one lane dirt road in the middle of nowhere.

ParticipantThat’s some crazy shit and one guess where would he have gone if a car had approached in the other lane. Bikes acting like “real” vehicles just doesn’t compute for some people.

ParticipantYou: Calling your pass.
Don’t get me wrong, calling out is better than not doing so and I’m glad you did, so that part of this post really belongs in “Found Connections” given how few people seem to grasp this simple concept. But did you have to do it as you were already passing, but still in my blind spot? You scared the Bejibberty Jeebus outta me ! Try it a couple of seconds earlier please.

I don’t think that truck was blowing coal. Don’t blowing coal kits modify the truck so it blows out a stack at the front cab? and not the rear exhaust? I think that truck is just shitty and smokes when it accelerates.
If I ever catch a truck that blows coal I’m going to boot it with my u-lock; lock it through one of their wheel hubs. Would be so worth it.

technically rolling coal is just exhausting a bunch of unburned fuel – the newbie diesel crowd thinks they’re making moar powrrr while doing so, but it’s really just the engine running a rich fuel map (or manually increasing the injector/lift pump pressure), dumping gas to keep the exhaust gas temps down at higher rpms/higher intake charge pressure.

Not sure if you’re serious or whimsical, but good luck with that. I’d be impressed if a U-lock fit around a hub/wheel in any lockable way let alone do anything other than scratch the rim as it clanked around or the torque ripped it apart.
Like Harry said; there’s no kit. Unfortunately it doesn’t take much to monkey with the fuel system for a diesel to ‘roll coal’. In the absence of a truck pacing me, driver yelling insults or other indicators; I assume the truck is just in need of a tune up.

ParticipantNot sure about the wisdom of the guy who sorta passed me this morning, deciding instead to pull along side and chat, only to realize that someone was coming from the other direction. Wash rinse repeat going down the hill in Rosslyn combined with a dart across all four lanes of Lee Highway to beat the light – earns you a DarWIN.

ParticipantI feel dirty posting this as I was the one driving but…
Date: Saturday – 1/3/15.
To the cyclist in the dark blue/green rain cape just before 7pm doing a U turn in my neighborhood (Circle Woods) with no lights at all and then riding back east on Lee highway, counter traffic, cutting across all seven lanes to then turn right onto Nutley / head towards Safeway. You are insane and scare the crap out of me. You appeared to know what you were doing??? Or at least pulled your insanity with bravado but wow….January 5, 2015 at 8:08 pm #1018564PotomacCyclist
ParticipantThis is a pedestrian post, but I thought I’d add it anyway. I was walking through a crosswalk, several seconds after the WALK signal lit up. A driver who is turning into that road felt like he had the right of way, to force pedestrians out of the crosswalk, namely me. I gave him an irritated look and asked what he was doing (mouthing the words). He clearly saw me since he look directly at me, and made a goofy smiley face, then continued driving right through the crosswalk, forcing me to stop suddenly so that he wouldn’t run me over.
I haven’t encountered something like this since, well, maybe the last time I walked around downtown D.C. (So much for the ongoing myth that drivers never behave aggressively or dangerously, and it’s only those “scofflaw cyclists” or jaywalkers who cause all the problems.)
