This.
Ugh. I’ve seen you sitting on the side of the trail smoking before. I’ve given you a pass on that. I’m glad you ride your bike. But people don’t even have to breathe your smoke at a bar anymore. They certainly don’t expect it while riding their bike to work.I assumed no one smoked anymore. Then I started biking to work and realized lots of people still smoke, but only in their cars apparently. I had never noticed before.

I’ll go with the Aflac mascot.

Me (spoken aloud): Holy… Buck.
You: Literally, a giant buck in Belle Haven Marina near the MVT.
Me: Speeding up as I realize you’re actually running in my direction rather than away from me for a solid 50 feet or so.
You: Mercifully stopped short of me by 10 feet and stood there looking like a silhouette from The Hartford’s logo.Let this serve as a warning to all, it’s deer rut season and they are fearless.
Crossbow bike for the win! Long tail, of course, so you can get the carcass home.

Your carcass or the buck’s?

Whoever wins, though the buck is unlikely to want to take my carcass home.

ParticipantI usually have a hell of a lot of trouble getting my own carcass home.

You’ll only be able to carry 100 pounds of it home (Oregon Trail logic).

You must have appeared quite attractive to him from a distance.

Always a bummer when you shot a bison. So much waste.

Unfortunately, I think I did or he didn’t like being between the water and me. I’ve had does on my driveway at home before (none yet this year, but plenty last year) who exchange mutual frightened looks with me when I come down it and we see each other. But not the aggressive type of buck yet. This was a first.

Their logo works. I immediately thought of it. But I had no idea TRowe Price had a ram.

ParticipantMe: very glad these were both missed connections instead of the alternative while doing errands in the rainy darkness at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday over the span of about 10 minutes. I had all of my lights on since it was dark.
Incident #1
Me: biking east in the Fairfax Drive bike lane around Virginia Square; I see the edge of a driver’s side door just barely sticking about 1-2 inches out from the car, and I start to move to the left edge of the bike lane
You #1: door opens out, swinging across the entire bike lane
Me: quickly checking left and moving into the traffic lane to avoid being dooredIncident #2
Me: biking east on Clarendon Blvd just before the light at Whole Foods in the buffered bike lane (buffered, of course, from cars on the left but not from cars on the right); biking sense starts tingling as I see a car that just parked and I move left
You #2: driver in parked car flinging the door open across the bike lane (not the buffered part) and looking straight forward, not even turning your head to see if anyone was there
Me: breathing a sigh of relief and thinking about playing the lottery todayNovember 7, 2014 at 7:38 pm #1014179Steve O

Good dodging.
I, too, have developed this sixth sense over many years of riding. I virtually never have a close call, because I can feel it coming in advance. I wish there were a way to impart this sense on our brother and sister cyclists. Not sure if the Blessing of the Bikes would do it. Perhaps a Blessing of the Bicyclists.
