Two crazy passes this afternoon on the MVT. First, Mr. No-Helmet-No-Call) passes me on the right as I’m completing my own pass and starting to merge back to the right. He ends up going off-road to complete his maneuver.
Someone did that to me once, approaching the Intersection of Doom. I caught up to him and explained why it was a bad idea.
Also saw a girl on a mountain bike do it years ago. She also went into the grass to pass on the right. She was on a mountain bike, so going off the trail is what they do, right? Sure – but sometimes they hit a rock and blow a tire.

ParticipantYou: guy with rack n’ panniers eastbound on the Custis Trail way out in the left lane, making a pass around a curve made very blind by the I-66 barrier wall.
Me: the guy rounding the curve westbound with possibly the worst looking face you can imagine, as I stare, my face paralyzed in what must have looked like a caricature of terror, at the narrow strip of path with no shoulder to which I had to cling to avoid catapulting into the VERY deep ditch to the right. I imagine I looked what Jim Carrey might look like if he were doing a comic exaggeration of a face of terror. I think my face was stuck that way for at least another quarter mile.

Actually, yeah! That could have been it!

ParticipantI always ding the bell going around those corners, in the hope that someone might think twice about passing.

ParticipantTo the two cyclists that I almost crashed into as I was getting off of the Custis Trail on my bike in Ballston onto the Fairfax trail ramp near 66, I apologize. I took the turn a little too tight and thanks to an ungodly glare I didn’t see the two of you coming. Thanks for yelling and snapping my back to reality, I’m glad we didn’t crash. Next time, I’ll take the turn wider.

ParticipantTo the ninja-driver in a black car around 10:30 pm coming towards me around the curve on Patrick Henry Dr between Rt 7 and Rt 50 towards me: you proved to me that ninja-drivers are far more terrifying than ninja-bikers or ninja-joggers! Please turn your headlights on, if not for the fact that it’s the law but that you might need to see things in front of you. Also, thank you for staying on your side of the road, as you are at least 1 for 2 in being a lawful driver because of it.

ParticipantTo everyone I passed this morning, sorry. I wasn’t even going fast, but it seemed like every time I passed there was a bike and pedestrian in too close proximity to justify it. I guess my timing was off today.
To the pedestrian at 18th and L: how am I a “jerk” because you decided to cross against the light without looking?

ParticipantYou: Scruffy looking guy on a BSO, riding across K St. NW at 17th against the light… both ways (He boxed the turn, against both lights… seriously!)
Me: The frustrated bike commuter who has been doing way too much driving lately.

ParticipantTo the two cyclists coming through the 4MRT underpasses who discovered me wedged against the railing right before the uphill turns, you were absolutely right, that WAS a bad place to stop.
Not as bad as the guy that was right in front of me who started up the left hand turn and then stopped with his bike blocking the entire trail, though.

ParticipantTo the lady that was walking her bike up Martha Custis yesterday while I was getting my HR under control before making the final climb – keep on rocking!

Reminds me of seeing two guys walking their bikes down the 14th St Bridge/MVT slight hill on VA side. Neither seemed to have a flat or any sort of bicycle problem so I have to say I was baffled.

I saw that the other day and thought the same thing. What’s really crazy is when you see more than two people walking like that.
After getting to the top of the hill last night (after three HR stops) I kind of wish I had walked it up instead.
