Fun ride in this morning:
You: jogger right in front of me crossing the at-grade crossing of Washington Blvd and the path that gets you to memorial bridge from 110.
Me: Right behind you, but giving you space since it’s not worth passing 10 ft before this crossing comes up.
2 cars came up to the crossing. One stopped, the other blew through, almost hitting the runner. Runner screams an insult about the driver being a female dog who sleeps with mothers, and gives the middle finger. The next car stopped and the jogger (and me) proceed with our journey. You: (different) jogger right in front of me crossing the at-grade crossing after memorial bridge on the DC side.
Me: Right behind you, but giving you space since it’s not worth passing right before this crossing either.
Once again, 2 cars came up to the crossing. One stopped, the other blew through, this time accelerating and almost hitting the runner. Runner screams an insult and gives the middle finger. The next car stopped and the jogger (and me) proceed with our journey. This is a totally different jogger than the first one, although they both were male, and probably between 25 and 35 y/o.Moral: Don’t Fall For Helpy’s Tricks.

ParticipantOn my return trip to work in Ballston from a TJ’s grocery run in Clarendon, I encountered both an adult CaBi rider and a teenage cyclist (they were not riding with each other) on the Fairfax Drive bike lane in the Virginia Square area.
The Bad: CaBi rider proceeded to run every red light (this was unnecessary because of how the lights were timed). Bad CaBi rider!
The Good: Teenage cyclist did the following:
– waited at EVERY red light
– avoided a right hook because he slowed after he recognized that an elderly driver had signaled and had started to turn right across the bike lane without looking
– had a Dickie moment with the CaBi riderTeenage cyclist, you earned a bunch of good karma points along with my respect. CaBi rider, go stand in the corner and think about what you did.

ParticipantYou: The pedestrian on the MVT this morning at Gravelly Point who, upon looking back and seeing me coming from behind, stepped over into the grass b/c a bike was coming the other way, even though I was still a good couple hundred feet back from you and hadn’t even rung my bell yet.
Me: I was going to slow until it was safe to pass, but thank you (which I stated out loud as I rode past). You allowed my progress to continue unabated.July 10, 2014 at 7:14 pm #1005593Emm

Strange, the moral I took my from my morning commute was “let pedestrians enter at-grade crossings before you so you look polite and they get hit by the cars first”.
When I’m pedestrian-ing (that’s word…I swear) I will now make cyclists go in front of me at at-grade crossings so karma can’t repay me for the previous sentence.

ParticipantMetro bus behind me at the stoplight: why are you honking at me? We’re not even moving! Oh, now that you’ve gone around me, I see that you’re honking at everyone. So sorry we can’t live up to your expectations. (At least it’s not just bikes that are the problem.)

ParticipantNext time, try to take note of the bus number (usually four digits) on one of the back top corners of the bus and report him/her to Metro. hey don’t take this kind of bad operator behavior lightly from what I understand…

Was he trying to make a right turn?

Nope. We were in the left turn lane, waiting for the red light to change. Once it did change, we both made the turn, and the bus passed me in the straightaway. Then the bus honked at a vehicle approaching from a side street, and at the car in front at the next intersection.

ParticipantGot Milloy’d by a driver from Potomac Springs Landscape this morning. As I was approaching the right hand turn from Westmoreland to Chain Bridge, about 10 feet from entering the 90 degree turn, he speeds around me so as to essentially cut me off mid-turn. Of course, this was not an easy maneuver for his truck, so he had to slow down quite a bit through the turn…he then peeled out as he accelerated away and then proceeded to run the red light at Chain Bridge and Tennyson. Unluckily for him, I was able to catch up to him at Old Dominion (good thing he drove so aggressively!!) and get a photo of his truck. I will be firing off an email to the company’s customer service and making sure I never patronize their business.

Me: Groggy man who left you behind at the house. I’m sorry. Come back to me. I’m hungry, want to eat lunch, and now I will have to beg a coworker to lend me $10.July 11, 2014 at 12:53 pm #1005633baiskeli

I’ve noticed bus drivers honking as warnings, like with cars about to enter the road in front of them from a side street or parking lot. Maybe this guy just got trained to do that and was taking it a little too far.

I’ve never forgotten my wallet, but I’ve forgotten underwear a few times.

ParticipantYou: Stopped by the Traffic Assistant at 14th and K before you went through a very yellow light
Me: Stopping behind you, giving you plenty of room for the inevitable reverse to get out of the crosswalkYou know, it’s usually good to take the car out of reverse once you’ve finished backing up. And by “finished”, I don’t mean “removed yourself from the place you shouldn’t have been”, because you certainly didn’t do that.
Good thing I warned the moped guy who pulled up next to me that you were still in reverse, because you definitely started to move backwards when the light turned green.
I blame inattentiveness and automatic transmissions.
