Yeah – I’ve run into this guy – Navy something or another attire and lots of sweat. Nice guy, but we need to teach him more words.

Wonder if it was the same dude I saw bounce off the hood of a car

Me: Suffering from the summer plague, struggling to breath but pushing ahead
You: Squeaky MTB rider drafting me for 5 miles
I appreciated the “thank you” when you turned off the trail… I would have responded but couldn’t speak.

Me (later): Still suffering with a summer plague.. perhaps now with a fever
You: Stealth elite lady passing me with no warning.
Apologies for being so grumpy and complaining about your non-call. You passed in a safe place, with plenty of space. Calling your pass was probably not necessary. Sickness brings out the curmudgeon in me. Ironically in my med-head fever-induced madness I passed you later, saying “good morning, passing on your left… how are you doing?”… you looked completely confused…. then it hit me.. I had just berated you 10 minutes earlier… sorry!

Thomas Circle, you are the worst. Had to take the lane instead of the bike lane because the CaBi rebalancer was blocking the bike lane (don’t get me started. I’ve complained to them, they say that have permission, but I can’t believe a real person who enjoys biking would actually say that). So I didn’t have to deal with cars failing to yield to me in the bike lane. Instead, a cab driver trying to turn right from the CENTER lane didn’t want to yield. Then, before I’d even cleared the light at the southern end of the circle, not one but two cars just merged into my lane without looking and would have hit me if I wasn’t paying attention.

Ah well, at least she now knows you don’t stay in a bad mood for long.

From midday yesterday near Virginia Square:

You: cyclist in proper cycling workout attire on Fairfax Drive who first shoaled me on the right side and probably would have been able to stay in front of me had you stayed in the bike lane. You kept weaving back and forth between the parking lane and the bike lane whenever you encountered a car, which was especially confusing for me because you were moving into the crosswalk at intersections.
Me: Thinking, “What is this guy doing? Is he turning? No. Can I pass him here? No, not enough room with cars zooming by on the left,” then finally making the decision to push it a little and pass you to avoid any conflict. I may have been in my work clothes (khakis and polo shirt due to the heat and humidity) and on a lunchtime grocery run, but I’m not as slow as you thought.

    From yesterday in the afternoon:

To the commuter cyclist wearing orange who complimented me on my kit and had a brief convo with me for a minute or two while approaching Van Dorn Street in Franconia: It was nice chatting with you! Kudos on being able to commute by bike to/from your job in DC everyday. Also, the road I was telling you about (Mulligan Road) is actually not open yet (it is scheduled to be open in mid-August). I ended up having to take Telegraph back to Alexandria.

Me: riding slowly behind another rider, who was riding slowly behind a big knot of joggers, on Custis, just before a bend that completely blocked the view of oncoming traffic.

You: woman cyclist who blew past the lot of us, cheerily calling “on your left!” as you went by.

Wow! If anyone at all had been in that oncoming lane, it would have been ugly. And your hair is as gray as mine; you should have known better.

We all do bone-headed things sometimes so I hate to judge, but there are too many threads on this forum about people getting hurt.

The “lance-wannabees” get called out a lot for bad behavior, but often the people doing the dumbest things are middle-aged and older, who like you said, should know better. Why the hell did she think you were queuing behind the joggers? For fun?!

Hey, guy who failed to yield to me when you made your left turn: I’ll be sorry I called you an [expletive deleted] if you be sorry you drive like an [expletive deleted].

That doesn’t seem likely since your response to being yelled at when you were completely in the wrong was to stop your car in the middle of the intersection, open your door, and glare at me, then make a phone call or I don’t even know what, I didn’t hang around.

You, sir, do not belong in polite society, and should remove yourself from it for the good of mankind. Thank you.

Everybody must be angry that the July 4 holiday is over and/or haven’t re-engaged their brains post-holiday. I was back to my regular route of Potomac Avenue from Del Ray through Potomac Yards to the CCCT when I heard a couple aggressive honks from the left lane. Look over to see driver of a Scion xB passing me pointing to the path alongside the road. I pointed to the left lane. This type of exchange is getting old, especially when there’s a city work crew near the bike path working on the sprayground, several dog walkers, not to mention that, aided by a tailwind, I was cruising at around 18 or 19 mph on this section, where the speed limit’s only 25 anyway. Sorry I may have slowed you down ten seconds, jackhole. Now go honk at someone who cares.

Me: headed eastbound on the W&OD about 6:30 this a.m., pulling out to pass another cyclist between Vienna and Cedar.
    You: Not in sight
Me: Still in the opposite lane, gaining some clearance after the pass, fading into lala land…
    You: whoa…Whoa…WHOA!
Me: Brought back into the present, veering sharply to the right to avoid the head-on collision that would have been my fault, offering a feeble apology.

After my whining about car drivers in the WaPo comments yesterday, it was fellow cyclists that were more the danger coming home (rare, but it happens). First, someone decided to make a blind pass just before TR Island on MVT. I was heading southbound and all of sudden there is someone right in front of me going “whoooaa.” Yes, whoa is right, like whoa wait five seconds until you can see before you pass, but at least he moved over quick. And then further down the MVT I came to the junction for the Rosslyn connector. I’m coming south at a decent clip and a woman coming up just decides to go right in front of me and turn left without so much as a sorry. If I wasn’t paying attention, that’s a nice t-bone as I hit the brakes pretty hard. C’est le vie.

    Fun ride in this morning:

You: jogger right in front of me crossing the at-grade crossing of Washington Blvd and the path that gets you to memorial bridge from 110.
Me: Right behind you, but giving you space since it’s not worth passing 10 ft before this crossing comes up.
2 cars came up to the crossing. One stopped, the other blew through, almost hitting the runner. Runner screams an insult about the driver being a female dog who sleeps with mothers, and gives the middle finger. The next car stopped and the jogger (and me) proceed with our journey.

You: (different) jogger right in front of me crossing the at-grade crossing after memorial bridge on the DC side.
Me: Right behind you, but giving you space since it’s not worth passing right before this crossing either.
Once again, 2 cars came up to the crossing. One stopped, the other blew through, this time accelerating and almost hitting the runner. Runner screams an insult and gives the middle finger. The next car stopped and the jogger (and me) proceed with our journey. This is a totally different jogger than the first one, although they both were male, and probably between 25 and 35 y/o.

Me: Cyclist who got onto the mostly empty sidewalk at around 3rd and E st SW so I could get into the parking garage at my work which is a block away but hard to enter from the road due to traffic from the 3 parking garages within the same block.
You: pedestrian who yelled at me to get off the sidewalk. You probably read the angry Washington Post article yesterday, except you probably didn’t know the “illegal to be on the sidewalk” line in the article only referred to the central business district, and not SW DC…esp not this 2 block section where the sidewalks are at least 20 feet wide and sparsely populated in the AM. We each had 10 feet to ourselves and I was biking slowly. Trust me, you were in no danger. I haven’t even come close to a pedestrian in the 4 months I’ve been biking this route.

I don’t blame the air for wanting to be free. It’s been under alot of pressure lately.
