Wow, this is really awful. That name is familiar — maybe I saw it on Strava? Anyway, first and foremost, I hope she has an uncomplicated and speedy recovery. Second, I hope the driver reconsiders and makes himself or herself available for the investigation.
I would love to send a card — if anyone has contact info for her, please send me a PM. Thanks.

ParticipantYou know, the sick thing is that the video clip is preceded by a BMW advertisement showing, in part, driving that would not be legal on the street.
Rather unfortunate product placement.August 28, 2012 at 3:27 pm #949776txgoonie

That’s such a typical anti-bike comment that it’s not even worth your time. Nothing you say will make a difference, except make you mad. Let it go.

ParticipantForgot to post this yesterday!
Me: black & pink 1993 Giant Rincon MTB locked up on C St NW. Slicks, original grips, SPDs.
You: black & pink 1993 Giant Rincon MTB locked up less than a block away on C St NW. Knobbies, bar ends, flat pedals.
I so should have gotten a picture but I was on the way to lunch and STARVING. Sadly it wasn’t there on the way back.
I’ll keep an eye out for it though!

ParticipantWe almost connected very hard. Me: Riding west on W&OD in that short little stretch between Sandburg and Gallows Rd. You: Crazy Ivana jogger who was spared from impact only by my lightning fast reflexes.
Oh, then 50yds later Helpy tried to get me at Gallows Rd. with an Atomic Helperton Maneuver, enticing me from the westmost lane to cross all four lanes of traffic so that he could feel like he helped. I didn’t fall for it.

ParticipantYesterday about 1745 – Me riding upriver on the Humpback Bridge. You were a peloton of two Arlington PD motorcycles on the trail heading south. Is there shared jurisdiction on the trail, particularly Columbia Island?

yup, Arlington emergency services cover the island and I think APD and NPS have shared enforcement jurisdiction. When I witnessed a car on jogger incident at the crossing of doom and called 911, it was Arlington EMS and APD that responded, and I gave my statement to APD.

If they have shared jurisdiction, maybe we could get APD to do some enforcement. Weird, given that it is not only NPS property, it is in the District.

ParticipantI need to get off reddit, seen a few articles today about cyclists getting killed on the roads (not in this area). Be careful out there!

Every now and again APD creeps onto NPS land…. and then disappears. For example, they liked to throw a speed trap up on spout run. Easy pickings. But then they disappeared and did not come back.
There are two possible explanations. First is that NPS told them to go blow. Second people who were ticketed argued in court that APD were outside jurisdiction and that the tickets were invalid.
Not sure which. But jurisdictional lines can have real meaning. I assume that is one of the reasons APD does not enforce Lynn St and Lee Hwy…. bc its a state road at that point and outside APD jurisdiction.
Again, all assumptions.

ParticipantTo ‘WADE’ the recumbent rider (Nice vanity plates!):
I never thought I would see a ‘bent trike split cyclists and oncoming runners on the Custis. The maneuver on the downhill of the two sisters was really nice, but I was also impressed by how you nearly clipped two people going over the Lee Highway bridge, with the sun in your eyes.August 29, 2012 at 2:06 pm #949882jrenaut
ParticipantTo the cabbie who crossed the bike lane without signaling right in front of me in order to turn right – thanks for at least acknowledging that you heard me yell “Nice signal”. Next time maybe try using it and yielding to the bikes in the lane you’re about to enter?

ParticipantTo the guy in the bright red and white jersey who blew past me at Glebe and Fairfax around 1800 tonight, mere milliseconds after the light turned green for our direction…
Hey, bonus points for waiting until the light turned green before blasting through the intersection at warp speed. Oh, and thanks for the nice breeze as you made sure to squeeze between me and the car to my left, with at least a couple of inches to spare on either side. What a great way to cool off while also raising my heart rate – it’s always hard to get that balance juuuuuuust right.
Oh, and by the way: those other folks on the trail? The ones you kept weaving in and out of at top speed all the way until you faded into the distance? Here’s an idea: try slowing to below Mach 10, so you can hear their adoring (Bronx) cheers as you pass between riders going one direction and runners coming the other. You wouldn’t want to miss the accolades you so richly earned tonight.
