Or more! I always take the west side of key bridge in the morning, so I only get counted once daily.

My friend here at work who has been a cyclist forever (commuting, but also mega-touring all over Europe–even crossed the alps in a snow storm!) will not make the W&OD crossings at Hunter Mill or Cedar because of the stuff he’s seen there: cars spinning out into each other, etc. Sometimes I wonder if using exclusively on-street routes would be safer than any MUP that includes road crossings. He’s decided not to ride his commute from Reston into the District anymore; he rides a mile to a bus stop and locks his bike up there.
Cedar seems more problematic than Hunter Mill. In my experience the drivers on Hunter Mill are more inclined to stop. Cedar is fine in for me in the morning because I’m there before 6:30, but at night I hit it after 5, and a lot of drivers there seem pretty hostile to cyclists. Cedar is my least favorite intersection from Reston to Shirlington.

Participant“Me: You’re right, but I’m sorry my bike light hurt your vagina. Son, in over 40 years of road and mountain biking I’ve never heard of a bike light “blinding” someone in broad day light, but I’m thankful you interrupted my conversation to tell me because someone with less patience would have knifed you for being so aggressive. Now continuing biking, sir, and remember cycling is a happy event, not an ocassion to act out because you are failing in other parts of your life. Bye-bye, and good luck.
Cyclists sure have changed in the last 40 years. “If I could turn back time….” Hope it happens again so I can YouTube it. Must buy a low-profile video camera. The light will stay on; it’s been great at road intersections (drivers actually stop for us now even at or near Cedar Lane and the “Intersection of Doom”) and alerting pedestrians to our presence throughout the trail. Great safety feature.“
I don’t get how your light could cause a problem like that in daytime, but I don’t think the situation calls for the level of hostility evident from either participant.
That said, your retelling of the story reflects poorly on you in that you resort to a sexist remark. You pretty much lost me there.

Truth. I missed this post originally, but I’m glad you called it out.

Wow, I only head out on the WO&D that way on the weekends so don’t see much traffic on Cedar or Hunter Mill. My worst intersection is Shreve Road because of the blind curves and speed of the cars. I really wish there were rumble strips and flashing lights there to warn motorists. No way I’d want to walk thru that crosswalk!

ParticipantHeading south on Westmoreland, I pull up to the light at Kirby behind another cyclist (an exceedingly rare occurrence.) She, not looking ELITE or anything, turns and says “you can go ahead, I’m slow up the hill.” At this point, I have no reason to think that I’ll be any quicker up the hill than she, so I decline…
Light changes and she takes off like a rocket. I tried to keep up just to see what kind of pace she was making, but I barely could keep within a couple hundred feet of her all the way down Westmoreland and onto the W&OD until I exited at the Westover Connector. When I uploaded my ride into Strava, she popped up as being someone on the same ride, and sure enough, she got the QOM for the hill at Longfellow MS.
The whole incident makes me feel like she’s some sort of Cat6 hustler who feeds on the crushed egos of those who eagerly take her up on her offer, only to get dropped like a hot rock 50 feet off the line. I am fortunate that I did not fall for her trick, but some of you might not be so lucky…so watch out, dear friends, the Cat6 is strong with this one.

tan lines would be a dead giveaway, though I’m unsure of a non-creepy way of ascertaining Rule #7 adherence if said Cat6 hustler isn’t in full regalia.

Since I head south on N Ft Myer, I also take the crosswalk across the I-66 off ramp. Unfortunately, that puts you at risk of the right-turn-on-red light runners who only are looking for the northbound traffic. You just can’t win there.

ParticipantThis is a less of a missed connection and more of an apology. I was going to get onto West Abingdon in OT right by the hotel when a car decided to try to squeeze into a really non-existent spot. Losing my inner-dirty, I dropped the f-bomb in the wtf fashion fairly loudly thinking only driver would hear me. Then I say this older woman walking her dog across the street. So I sheepishly said, pardon me. Need to channel my inner-dirt a little better.

Perhaps you are right about me, but I think my story may not reflect the non-verbal communication of the aggressive gentleman. A less crass statement by me may have provoke a more aggressive reaction from the sdbp. Hard to say I guess. Judging others over the interwebs is a tricky business I guess.
See you in the bike path. I’ll be the guy wih the flashing bike light on. First beer on me. I stand by my story. No changes.
