First page of google: http://www.parkitbikeracks.com/outdoor-bike-racks/inverted-u-bike-parking-racks.html (make sure you look at both pictures). When you have a 6 or 8 bike wave it’s less ambiguous. But with all the wacky bike parking you see these days I don’t think any roughly square bike parking facility is intuitive.

And if the rack is rarely utilized then it’s better at any rate from the cyclists point of view to use it in parallel rather than perpendicularly because that style of rack is fundamentally flawed: you can’t securely lock both wheels and the frame to it without taking your bike apart, and your bike is extremely likely to fall over anyway. Yeah, it reduces the available spots, but I can think of several of those sucky wave racks where I’ve never actually seen a bike parked, and where I’d probably park parallel if I for some reason needed to park there.

    Yes, this is actually hard.

Thanks for the explanation. I guess I’m so used to the wave racks at the Ballston parking garage because they are the 6-8 bike size and I use a U-lock to attach the front wheel and frame to the rack with a cable running through the back wheel that it’s hard to see how anyone could get it wrong. I’ll be a little more conscientious next time I see this happen.

At least we don’t have those awful Venus fly trap bike racks that used to be at the Ballston metro!

Dear RWG running group, please try your best to stay on one side of the path. I know it’s a military type charity race you guys are prepping for, but it’s a really bad idea to run 3 abreast taking up both lanes almost entirely. This is particularly true at the blind corner on the MVT by the power plant. Luckily I had slowed enough that my brake-skid maneuver almost into the fence and your jump saved us both from an embarrassingly easy to avoid collision. With that said, props to whomever was riding behind me and yelled at them to try to stay to one side of the path–hopefully they listened! On a side note, this reminded me why the warmer it gets, the more I end up on the roads in OT and elsewhere to avoid the shenanigans.

You: The driver of the sedan who decided to celebrate BTWD by running the red at Hummer and LRT
    Me: Happy BTWD!

You: The bus rider on the 29G asking who said he had thought of doing BTWD and had never bike commuted. Hope I inspired. Sorry I couldn’t give you a Pentagon to K street NW route off the top of my head. I will research it and let you know if I see you again.

Everyone I saw biking in the rain: Happy BTWD!

Thanks, and thanks for inspiring. Pentagon to K St: Connector Road –> Boundary Channel Drive –> wooden bridge –> LBJ Memorial –> Columbia Island Marina –> under the humpback bridge –> MVT Map

Then 14th St Bridge, Memorial Bridge or TR Bridge depending on where exactly on K St the person is going.

Or take the trail along Washington Blvd and the two crossings of the “parkway” to Memorial Bridge. It ain’t pretty, but it’s short.

That’s the part I know, as that’s my route. :)

You: the woman I scared the poo out of.

Me: the guy who knocked on your window.

I’m sorry I surprised you. I understand that you had to keep your eyes open for a chance to turn right on red. The thing is, I had a walk signal on the MUP, and you never, ever looked right. The signal turned white before you even got to the crosswalk but I predicted you wouldn’t stop. And I was right: your ridiculous, highly polished, big engine, extended cab, black “work truck” never stopped rolling. You didn’t even have a hand on the wheel, since both were busy brushing your hair. So, actually, I guess I’m not sorry. Maybe you’ll think about looking right before turning right in the future and maybe I saved a life. Seems worth a little scare.

Dear barefoot, running guy along Suitland Road outside the SFC.

Wow. You are in great shape and I applaud your running efforts. You should know though that I bought gatorskin tires specifically for the roads of SE DC and all the glass that covers them. It is ridiculous. If your feet are tougher than a pair of super durable bike tires though, that’s great. You may be part hobbit. Otherwise you’re likely just recreating Bruce Willis’ shattered glass scene from Die Hard. At least wear those toe shoes.

I was walking on 16th St NW a few weeks ago and had to smack a hood as I walked through the crosswalk with the light and the right turner never once looked for me. Too bad for him he was on my left. Hope my wedding band didn’t scratch the hood, though I certainly wouldn’t lose any sleep if it did.

This is why, again, right on red should be illegal anywhere there might be a person not in a car.

No, nobody should wear those toe shoes. They creep me out.

To the dude on the Kestrel riding my rear wheel down Minnehaha Creek – thanks for the fist bump once I made it up the hill by Nicollet. Had my front derailer cooperative I would have kept pulling you but an extra 140lbs and no lower gears made for a painful climb.

So how is life in the mid-West? I presume the snow is finally gone? I hope your health is well.

You: The cyclist in a kit this morning, who turned west onto East Capitol (legally) in front of me. With us travelling due west, the sun was at our backs.
Me: Wishing I had been able to catch up with you to tell you that your shorts were full-on Lululemon completely see-through in the sun. Fortunately not the chamois part.

It’s going great, haven’t been this happy ever. Snow was gone in early April and the lakes “iced out” in mid-April so now it’s time to get back to 100 miles a week.

You: In a purple shirt and black jeans riding really low without underwear revealing at least 2/3 of you hairy crack, going 2-3 mph across the Roosevelt Bridge from the MVT to DC.

Me: Stuck behind you, with the aforementioned crack staring me in the face for the interminable slow ride across the bridge.
