You: Driving in the middle lane of Old Georgetown Road southbound yelling, “Sidewalk!” as though that was where I should be riding.
Me: Cycling in the right turn only lane next to you, cheerfully calling back, “You’re an idiot!”
You: Going straight ahead at the next light, proving you couldn’t have used the lane I was in anyway. And no one else was turning right, either, so it’s not even like I was causing other cars to stay in your lane longer than they otherwise would have.

Seriously? ! It’s bad enough when drivers tell me to get off the road (and pedestrians tell me to get off the sidewalk; presumably they expect my bike to be able to fly?) normally. But why would you do this when I’m not even slowing you down in the slightest?

As far as I’m concerned, anybody trying to use a phone while moving in any direction is a potential threat to themselves and other people/objects around them. Also, I don’t buy the argument that some people make when they claim, “But I CAN be safe and alert while using my phone when I walk/bike/drive!” Anecdotes aside, there’s actual empirical evidence to the contrary of that claim.

I like to think I’m a pretty experienced bicyclist but I would have a hard time holding and reading my phone while on my bike. Let alone in traffic. Wow.

    The proper response is “Beltway!”

There is a sign on the CCT warning cyclists not to text while riding. I’ve always wondered how there could possibly be enough people capable of doing this at all to justify a sign.

There’s a guy I’ve passed a couple times who rides with no hands while on his phone going uphill in the 15th St. cycletrack. Passing him is a bit unnerving given the weaving and not looking up…

Add in cyclists and pedestrians to said list of idiots on their phones. I’ve seen a collision and many near-collisions from all combinations of drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians because one or both were on their phones instead of paying attention.

Today I was almost walked-in-to while stopped by a guy reading a sheet of paper, and refusing to look up to either “good morning” or “heads up” (“please don’t walk in to me” worked). I had to chuckle at how old-fashion it was.

I find myself saying that far too often these days. Sometimes, it’s not with the purpose of getting the driver’s attention like in your case but mainly because these idiots are using their phones while driving and being oblivious to the fact that their actions are impairing their driving.

So here’s one for you: last night when I got home, kids were hanging out in the garage/driveway. So we all played for a while. At one point, a neighbor turned on to our street, stopped in the middle of the street (there’s no yellow line in front of our house, but had there been, he would have been straddling it), right in front of us, and clearly was looking at a map on his phone. He was there for a minute or two without looking up or moving at all, but no other cars came so no big deal. Then, still staring straight at his phone, without looking up and apparently oblivious to the fact that two toddlers were playing yards away from him, he just starts rolling forward. He rolls about 10 yards before looking at the street AT ALL.

He’s a neighbor. I don’t know his name, but see him around often enough. He did this in between two houses with toddlers. Of course we watch our kids like hawks, but toddlers are wiley creatures, and sometime escape.

Next time I see him, do I point out that I noticed how he drove his car without looking at the road, and that in a neighborhood with so many young kids, that is particularly dangerous?

I always preferred “Kill yourself immediately.” As far as the idiots on phones – when I was in town last week I saw five tourons/space cadets texting and oblivious to the world on the MVT and on Crystal Drive. I just don’t get it.

And if he complains, respond innocently with, “Gee, I guess the toddlers must have left those out there. You really have to be so careful when there are toddlers around!”

That’s an entirely reasonable thing to do, though it will require much channeling of Dirt to get a good outcome. Good luck.

Keep a set of sharpened jacks (that the toddlers can’t get to) to use as caltrops.

Jacks? That’s not a caltrops; this is a caltrops:

And you have to admit, it would be hilarious to watch him drive into that.
