About half the time I’ll give a triple ring heading west under Carlin Springs Rd on the W&OD, especially if the trail is very busy. That’s one of the few places I regularly encounter other trail users cutting the corner. More people cut the corner on the W&OD at the right angle turn between Brandymore Castle and the East Falls Church basketball court, but most of the year they are visible through the trees.

Ah, and that little tunnel just west of the basketball court has a rather tight and blind kink in it when you’re heading east. I now ring my bell before/in the tunnel, just to notify anyone who happens to be loitering on the trail just past the east side of the overpass. Seriously, DON’T STAND THERE.

I’ve had a couple barely missed connections with individuals in both of the tunnels/underpasses along the Crystal City Connector, and try to make it a habit to ring my bell there around the blind corners/approaches. Doesn’t always help, though… EARBUDS BLASTING!!!

    Did you report it?

Only every single month at BAC
    AND on the Arlington app
AND personal phone calls to the guy who is in charge of streetlights
AND emails to the county board.
AND several personal conversations with Dave Goodman

Excellent! Please report back what you hear.

Maybe you could add in the underpass at Glebe and the Four Mile Run Connector too?

I can already do that. What I’ve heard is that Arlington County is not competent to take on the task to fix these.
I hear whining, “The Buh-ridge belongs to vee-duh-aught and they wuh-on’t let us tuh-utch it.”
    “I uh-only duh-eal with streetlights, I thuh-ink those are puh-arks.”
“Parks does not have any muh-unny and it’s nuh-ot our responsibility.”
Then they claim we have to undertake some $xx thousand dollars of study or something, “and we duh-on’t have the muh-unny.”

And then, instead of actually using brains and approaching the problem like a business would, they throw up their bureaucratic hands and say nothing can be done. Tough sh*&t.

    There’s your report.

Pro-Tip: It doesn’t work when you report it to the wrong people!

I assume you took it to VDOT then? What’d they say?

A good civil servant will ALWAYS help a citizen get to the right people. We dont expect citizens to comprehend the absurdities of bureaucratic hallways.

What would a business do in that situation?

Me: Commuting home on 15th/The Mall
You: The aspiring Cat 6 racer barreling down the mall sidewalks at speed with tourists everywhere

There really was no need to go so fast with pedestrians on the sidewalk everywhere. This should have been evident by the fact that I was going slowly and caught up with you at every crossing.

Me: The middle aged rider on the lovely Dew, in the very brief bike lane that emerges from the sharrows east bound on EYE street SW, at the intersection with South Cap. Just past the Capital Skyline Hotel.
You: The passenger in the large white, I guess some kind of SUV, shouting at me to “get to the right!”

I was in the bike lane, exactly where I was supposed to be. Further right at that point would have meant being in the right turn lane and as I was not turning right, would have meant blocking right turning traffic. Why I was not further right just before should have been evident to anyone with sense – not only is that part a sharrows, but the buses stopped in front of aforesaid hotel meant there was no possible room to even filter slowly, and I HAD to take the lane. Which really didn’t slow anyone down anyway, since we all just ended up at the red light at S Cap. And its not like you were even trying to make a right across the dash-stripped bike lane – you proceeded on through on Eye to SE. I am quite sure you are not a cyclist, but hope someday you will be – not so much for your wellbeing, which its hard to motivate myself to care about, but so you can understand situations like that.

This is why bike lane to sharrows to bike lane is sometimes even worse than no bike infrastructure. It confuses drivers (well, inattentive drivers, anyway, but that often seems to be most of them). I don’t particularly like that intersection in either direction for numerous reasons.

This thread seems to increase post counts every spring. Coincidence?
