The mother ship in Foggy Bottom does have some loaner bikes for State employees to use to go to meetings and between annexes. Of course, the annexes don’t have bikes so we’re on our own to visit the mother ship. We do have a CaBi station right across the street from my office in Rosslyn.

ParticipantI keep checking Strava to see if consularrider has ridden another one of his centuries today. If school opens late tomorrow I’ll see you at FCCII, otherwise I’ll be there in spirit only!

If only they’d share the fleet with Fed employees… Or if the Fed would just give its employees CaBi memberships

That would be such a fantastic idea. I feel like just getting some Feds out on bikes would do so much to change the entire culture of the federal government. Priorities at DHS are so screwed up I can’t even put it into words. And getting out and riding a bike is just a slippery slope to getting perspective on your life and realizing what’s really important.

We were able to buy 200 CaBi memberships for a one year pilot program at HUD. We had 381 employees sign up for these memberships and we awarded them randomly. Needed to deal with the Union and the procurement office. Lets chat about how you can build on what we accomplished.
Full disclosure: Bob Cannon did this before us and he graciously shared everything he did with us.

If you give me a tax-deductible way to do it, I will buy a Fed a CaBi membership. And my wife is a lawyer at the NLRB, so perhaps i can assist with any union issues. I have street-cred-by-marriage.

ParticipantThere are a number of federal agencies that are certified as Bike Friendly Businesses. State Dept is pretty great. I think NIH and NIST are pretty great. NPS. FWS. EPA. DEQ.
There are also a number of federal agencies that are CABI partners: HUD, FCC, USDA, Dept Interior, OPM
And then there is this: The Federal Bike to Work Challenge listing 164 teams from all around the country.
There was also once a Federal Interagency Working Group on Bicycle Commuting. It’s essentially inactive altho there is a mailing group.
DHS may be a mess. But ICE has a bicycle program and a number of people who bike to work (ICE is across the street from my office). ICE had the ICE CYCLES team in the Fed Bike to Work challenge.
It takes someone inside who is advocating (not whining). My management has been thrilled by how this has made us look good – and how it is a positive for work life – and for health and welfare. Probably the biggest difference at my place of employment was the designation of a Volunteer Bicycle Coordinator – so that the dialog went from a cacophony of employees to a single point of contact for management.

ParticipantI’ve heard rumors that there’s openess at the Fed (as in Federal Reserve) to doing more, though we’re about to renovate the building with bike parking and showers, so it’s possible things get a whole lot worse before they get better.
How things work at the Senate is a big black box to me. There is a TON of bike parking, and there’s been a steady stream of bikes, even through this weather.

Imagine the next step – skiing down the W&OD with a bike strapped to his back.

Participant02/20/14 about 4ish PM, you heading north on your bike at 7th and R street NW, slammed on the brakes for the red light and went over your handle bars into the intersection. Me, stopped and asked if you were ok. I didn’t think to ask if you knew how to avoid doing that again, if you dont as here, plenty will tell you how.. Some of us will show you if you want (including me)

ParticipantMe: Cyclist heading north on Eads in the left turn lane to go west on Army-Navy in Pentagon City waiting for a green arrow (on the way to FCCII)
You: BMW to my right in the go straight lane with his left turn signal on.Me: Thinking we must give this Bavarian a wide berth
Green arrow comes and this ultimate motorists is attempting to pass me on the right as I blend over towards the curb lane. Seems he couldn’t be delayed because he had to get into the parking lot on the right about 250 feet ahead. I was successful at suggesting he drop back behind me as we jointly (me lawfully, him a bit scofflawish) the turn.
All turned out ok. I would have been quite miffed if he had somehow prevented me from making it to FCCII.
