I stopped to check out the two bald eagles in the tree right at the end of Gravelly Pt by the entrance ramp to 395 north. I’ve seen them several times before, but always south of OT and never that close to the city…
I was just watching a bald eagle soaring over Key Bridge and the office towers of Rosslyn (nice to have a ninth floor view).

I bet it’s the same one. There were two bald eagles and another large bird (possibly another bald eagle sans white head–i have no idea if that’s some sort of sex, age, or related item with bald eagles) when I first went for the look. One of the bald eagles did fly off to the north (around ~8:30ish), so I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the same one. I’m impressed that the train track there, 395 and GWP noise, and planes didn’t bother them. South of OT it’s really just some GWP traffic they would contend with.

Yep.

On the eagle theme, there is actually a very large eagle nest just upstream of the Key Bridge that is pretty easy to spot in winter from the DC side or river before the trees leaf out. This is the time of year eagles are sitting on the nest. Should have eaglets by the end of Feb or early March. Parents switch off who sits on the nest so you’ll likely be seeing a lot of the eagles around Key Bridge if that nest is active this year. I’ll take the binoculars down to WCC this weekend and try to see if that nest is occupied.
It has been awesome to see how the eagles have come back to this area. And as often as I see them they never cease to amaze me.

Oh it’s the young one. This makes perfect sense since their nest south of OT (by golf course) clearly has young in it as I’ve heard lots of chirping coming from it when I’ve seen the adults on top of it.

ParticipantOh, sorry, this connection was definitely made.
You: company truck with Maryland tags
Other You: WMATA bus that t-boned the company truck at 7th and Independence SWYou know, truck driver, there just might be a good reason that it’s illegal to a) make a right from the center lane unless it’s explicitly marked and b) make a right in front of a bus. Just sayin’.
Looked pretty low-speed and doubt there were any real injuries. But that guy is going to have a really tough time explaining the condition of his truck to his boss (and the police, who were arriving as I went past).

ParticipantTo the motorist southbound on the GWMP (between the Humpback and the crosswalk) that appear to have unsuccessfully attempted to draft off the car ahead. While it works, you gotta pay attention. You appeared to have missed the latter point. For that, you singlehandedly screwed traffic during last night’s commute for all your fellow commuters.
Well almost all your fellow commuters. The MVT was open and clear.
Was I wrong to ride out of my way up the MVT to get a better view and do some gloating?

“Got it.”

Cars trying to go during the bike signal is already a huge issue there. If it makes you feel any better, I’m sure his El Salvadorean friend was only in town for a short while and she really needed that escort to quickly navigate the city.

I had a blue car–MD plates of course–do the same to me last night between 14th and 15th. That’s normal enough, but the extra special part was that they proceeded to parallel park on the block then yell at me as I was waiting for the light to change. I’m not normally prone to violent impulses, but I suddenly understood those all stories about cyclists going off and swinging Kryptonites at people.

I’ve had the u-turner I yelled at park and yell at me, too. Of course I thought of a great response two minutes later. The other cyclist right in front of me had my back, though. And that stupid light. At least once a week I have to yell at someone for turning on red. Most of the time they get mad and go anyway. I think out of dozens I’ve had maybe two apologize for trying to kill me.
