ParticipantLast night –
You: Unseen low-hanging branch along the sidewalk/trail along Ohio Dr around the Tidal Basin on my way to 14th St Bridge.
Me: Busy enjoying the snowflakes mixed in with the rain, paying attention to what was on the sidewalk.
You: Thwack!
Me: Glad I was wearing my helmet and glasses. That could really have hurt.
You II (NPS): Please keep the trees properly trimmed so that they’re not likely to hit cyclists and peds in the head as they go that way.December 18, 2013 at 4:17 pm #988866dbb

Participant^^^Yes, that branch almost took me out too last night! A last second head jerk saved me.

I’m surprised you say R and S, because I rarely have a problem there. I’ve definitely seen it at both, but not recently. Maybe it’s light timing at different times of day? Most days I come through early, around 3pm.
My family was visiting and rented a (very lovely) with a great view of the light at 15th and S. Cars ran the red and turned left ALL THE TIME.

Just sent a note to the NPS on this one.

Glad I wasn’t the only one then. I thought I must have really been in a daze and particularly inattentive, but I guess that was more to it than that.

Got a response from the NPS in under 10 minutes! They are on the mission!
Hoping for a less eventful commute tonight.

ParticipantYou: little white 2-door turning right from the I66 off ramp onto Lynn towards the Key Bridge.
Me: cyclist legally crossing with the turn signal, yelling when you started to go when I was a bike length away (and moving towards you)But wait! There is an ACPD officer right there! Hooray – finally a non-yielding jerk will pay for her…
Um, officer, that car just failed to yield. You were watching. You heard me yell…
So, yeah, more ACPD suckage. I went back to talk to the officer, who pulled someone else over (for what must have been a decal violation — I didn’t see that driver do anything wrong) so I would have to wait to talk to him. I summoned my inner Dirt quite well, but was met with arguments like I was not in danger and there was not a near miss. On top of it, I was told that it’s better to avoid such intersections (why, yes, I do except THIS ONE IS UNAVOIDABLE). All in all, it was a very disappointing encounter. I will be writing a letter (suggestions on where?).
On top of it, while the officer was with the not-safety-related violation, I witnessed three other cars fail to yield, one stopping only inches away from a bike’s wheel.

I would be thrilled if MPD came out to any of the 15th St intersections and ticketed anyone who ran the light using any means of transportation.

It’s not even that it’s unavoidable…It’s the intersection of two signed bike routes and the junction of two MUPs!
About the only positive I can say about this is that, at least the times I’ve gone through, the cop’s presence usually tempers drivers’ behavior a bit.

Not so much this morning. Multiple cars running the red light from the I-66 ramp and heading north on Lynn (and several block the box infractions). The motorcycle officer did manage to block the left lane of Lynn north of Lee so that no one was using the left turn lane to get around the backed up traffic heading to Key Bridge.

Wow that is absolutely [expletive deleted] infuriating. Hey buddy, how about enforcing the laws and [expletive also deleted] sparing us your ill-informed opinion? This reminds me of the clueless ACPD’s response to one of us taking the lane over on N. Glebe.

Those are my biggest problems with the encounter. (1) lots of people on staff at ArlCo have planned for this to be a bike route. ACPD shouldn’t be planning for bikes to avoid it.
(2) that driver just did that in front of a cop. She saw it and lots of other drivers saw it. Now they all think it’s ok to do. A cop sitting there but not pulling people over who fail to yield is worse than no cop at all.December 18, 2013 at 5:53 pm #988899Drewdane
