You: Gentleman running south without a shirtSir, you are the epitome of rule 5 and rule 9! Huzzah!
Did I mention it was about 32F at the time?
Dana, You just reminded me: Saturday after the Cider Ride (~32 F) on Custis, Karen and I going west between Ballston and W&OD, we saw a man in his early 30’s running east wearing NOTHING but a pair of shorts — yes, barefoot too! I was tired and cold. I couldn’t believe my eyes, but Karen saw him, too!

The rules we are obligated to live by (or aspire to).

You burgundy mini van turning right who felt the compelling need to stop 1/2 the way into the turn for no visible to me reason thus giving me the choice of doing a stoppie and then going over the bars and running it out or cleaning the road salt off the side of your van with my face and upper torso.
Thanks for two things.
1. The nice dent in my kneecap from hitting some hard bit on my bike while going over the top and costing me 30 min to re-true the rear wheel on the 29er.
2. For delaying me just the right amount of time that I ended up sharing the trail with Hozn for a little bit of the W&OD.I’ll call it even.
Holy crap Vice, that sucks! I hope you’re OK… I ride that section everyday, I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for the burgundy mini-van…. or should I say Satan’s delivery truck?

As always, Hozn is there when needed… do you just patrol the trails in a cape and mask at night? WWPD award nominee!

You’ve hit on the fundamental problem of the Custis through here, which is that it’s really just a sidewalk with some “lane” markings on it and bike signage. To pedestrians, many of whom are staying at the Marriott and thus not local, it’s really not clear that the “sidewalk” is actually an MUP and they should pay attention accordingly. I’m guardedly optimistic about getting proper bike-ped separation here at some point during my lifetime.

Oh, I did *nothing* helpful for Vicegrip — I just said it was lucky he had disc brakes (wheel very bent) and then taunted him with my studded tires and urged him to n+1 with a cx bike.

Fixed. I need little help with wanting a CX. The 29r is not quite right and I cant bring myself to ride the crabon bike in the salt.
Quote of the day. After we rode over a patch of notchy lumpy ice Hozn says. “I like the adrenalin! “

By the way, if you want bike-ped separation on the Custis in Rosslyn, please speak up on this thread. I suggested this, Chris asked what others thought, and the conversation then shifted to other things, so no one else spoke in support. I believe the Custis plans going forward only call for a wider MUP, which will continue to suck with clueless peds. PLEASE Answer Chris’s call and agree with me

Did you see me point to the sidewalk blocked sign? Thanks for being the only driver out of dozens today who was a jerk.

Feel free to invite such families to Kidical Mass Arlington (or DC) rides. The Arlington rides normally leave from somewhere with parking, and plenty of families drive to the rides. It’s a good way to get an intro to family biking in a friendly, safe environment. And to ask lots of questions.
