ParticipantTo the angry man in the red and white jersey this morning:
I am soooo sorry for not squeezing myself between a car that was already angled into the bike lane and the Vamoose bus at a RED LIGHT, so that you could more easily speed down N. Lynn street. Thank you for yelling “you idiots! Learn how to bike!”.
I’ll make sure to stay out of your way the next time that you’re late for work.

I hate that section of the Lynn St bike lane. Luckily I’m only going that direction on my homeward commute and can easily take the lane from Wilson to the intersection of doom.

Sadly, I would taking angling in these days over full out using the cycletrack on 15th st as a turn lane. Ever since they started construction, I’ve seen vehicles using the lane to turn right onto M as a literal turn lane.

You: Yellow t-shirt and mountain bike passing with nary a word or warning.
Me: “Thanks for the call”
You: Slowing down to spend a minute to tell me why you don’t need to spend a few seconds to say “On your left”.
Me: Not surprised to later see you shoaling at the Lynn & Lee Highway.October 7, 2013 at 1:42 pm #983049birddog

ParticipantJust a thanks to the kind soul that pulled me around Gravelly Point. I was trying to take a turn up front, not break away. I hope the rest of your ride was pleasant.

Wow! I bicycle through that intersection very often and two weeks ago the exact same thing happened — a car on Washington totally ignoring the red light, almost hitting me when the light turned green for us. I was coming from the same direction as the car that got hit [from the library towards Washington-Lee].
Makes me pretty nervous about using that intersection again, especially since the bike lane is interrupted in a strange way when driving next to Washington-Lee. I suppose it is to make room for the car turn-lane but it makes for a dangerous bike ride since you’re forced into accelerating traffic all of a sudden.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE call this in to the ACPD non emergency line. There’s a school right there (which would be helpful to point out). 703-558-2222 In fact, the more people who call it in, the more likely we’ll get some enforcement.

Almost had a repeat of that situation yesterday when I was biking on Four Mile Run about to get onto W&OD at Shirlington Rd. I see moron SUV driver decides to go through the intersection more than a full second (probably was about 2, actually) after the light turned red. It was like he didn’t even see the unobstructed bright RED color at the intersection in front of him! Luckily traffic turning from Four Mile Run Rd waited long enough for there to not be a close call.
I usually only encounter this with drivers at intersections with stop signs that are either obstructed or at intersections so big and wide (they rival parking lots sometimes) that the closest spot for a sign is way out of the driver’s line of sight. That said, I am more forgiving due to the poor sign placement than I am with careless red light runners.

ParticipantThen this morning there was the driver in the beige sedan who decided the light turning red didn’t apply to her as she headed west on Wilson at George Mason. And it was in front of an Arlington County police officer who was waiting to turn left from George Mason to go west on Wilson. Unfortunately, the lure of the McDonalds kept the officer from a high speed pursuit of that scofflaw motorist.

For what it’s worth I stayed around to talk to the police once they showed up — the officer thanked me for sticking around and asked me to email him my video (which I did).
But I agree that that intersection is not very fun.

I just called, and they said that they need a license plate to record incidents like this. Maybe I should get a camera…
