Have you ever seen a squirrel?
Squirrels will bit your nuts and run away with them!

ParticipantTo make the record clear, I did not see the rabbit until it jumped onto the W&OD and into the light of my headlamp. Then it was too late.

I didn’t mean to imply that there was something you could have done to avoid the rabbit. Rabbits may be cute, but they have very low awareness of MUP best practices.

It’s unclear bunnies have any positive attributes besides being cute (although they might be tasty).
Two words related to squirrats and cuterats: brunswick stew!

ParticipantWe have a squirrel family living in the tree above our house. A few months ago, my dad helped me trim the branches of said tree, which prompted the parent squirrel to carry all it’s little squirrel children over to another tree for safety. It must’ve made three or four trips, dutifully carrying the young’ins down the old tree and up the new one, which took a good amount of time and, I’m sure, effort…so yeah, squirrels are alright in my book, and I’ll go out of my way to not kill one.

Ok, so there’s one good squirrel in the area.

I can’t really say that squirrel did a bad thing, since that was going to be a crummy picture anyway (crooked horizon right in the middle of the frame? Come ON people). But think how much better that would have been if it had been a nice animal, like an elk or a coatimundi, rather than that little rat-thing.

Some say the same about squirrel.

It’s ok. I killed a young bunny along the W&OD near Cochran Mill Rd. last spring. It’s my first and only instance so far. The dumb thing just ran under my tires. It’s just semi-natural selection at work.

Now, wait a minute. There is a large difference between a squirrel and a bunny. Bunnies are cute and running over a bunny is very sad. Squirrels are vermin and running over a squirrel is only sad if it hurts you or your bike. I tried to teach my daughters the proper name for them – tree rats – but “society” insisted on forcing its views on them. They’ve settled on “squirrat”, which seems like a good compromise.
You, sir, do not have a vegetable garden.

ParticipantI have to say, to me, one of the great attributes of cycling is the lack of road kill. Seeing all the dead animals along the side of roads is tragic.

ParticipantThat may explain the completely flat bunny in the bike lane on Lee Hwy in Cherrydale this morning. I was very skeptical a bike could have done that.
