On the legal side, I was sent the appropriate VA Code and, based on my email, it didn’t seem like I had qualified for any of the exceptions to not riding as far right as practicable.

LOL, ask them to define “safely practicable” in precise legal terms, then aim the Bike Arlington signal at the night sky.

So many missed connections this morning..
    1) little kid (!) by himself as far as I could tell, riding up the hill from under the W-L parking garage on the Custis this morning. He passed a jogger going up the hill and came very close to wobbling into my path. If there had been one of those piles of pine needles in that particular spot where I slammed on the brakes, we might have both gone down. I think we were both appropriately jolted out of our morning stupor. Another reminder to maintain a safe speed on the downhills, since you just never know.
    2) Man with a loincloth in the TR parking lot…? Brrr
    3) Four Capitol police officers on bikes riding down the MVT. Made me wonder if something was going on.

I’ve seen this before. I assume it’s just a training ride. It’s a bit far from their normal beat for them to be responding to something.

Me: in a bright orange jacket (fashionable DKNY orange, not safety orange, but it will do) entering the sharrowed lane in the 1100 block of L St from the L St bike lane.

You: the jackhole in the truck that felt it was necessary to tap on your horn multiple times behind me.

I really like the way you floored it and aggressively pulled into the middle lane. It got you to that red light an entire 5 seconds faster than me and you ended up behind 2 cars instead of 1. Well done sir!

I just love it when drivers do that only to beat me to the red light! Classic.

Me: Coasting down Ridge Road in Rock Creek Park

You: Also on a bike, checking your phone and taking the lane.

When I hear shouts from drivers that I’m blocking traffic, I sometime think that the only way I could do that is if my bike was perpendicular to the flow of traffic. Maybe those drivers had encountered you before. There’s a nice, but parking lane on the other side of the road…you couldn’t go the extra 10 feet to stand there?

Rather than a missed connection, this was an unfortunate connection. A rabbit darted in front of me when I was riding on the W&OD early this morning while it was still dark. I just experienced an unexpected bump. The rabbit did not fair as well.

I missed a suicidal squirrel the other day on the W&OD. Ran right in front of an oncoming cyclist into the weeds to my left, then back just as I was passing the same spot. Maybe some kind of adolescent squirrel dare thing.

Nice to see that you’re leading your young son (about 8 or 9) on a bike ride using the bike lanes on Wilson Blvd, ma’am. There’s a bike shop just ahead – maybe you should stop and buy him a helmet, and pick up one for yourself too.

I think I saw this poor little guy when I went through…just east of the Bluemont junction? Made me very sad :( I almost hit a squirrel yesterday on Longfellow while going about 25mph on the dowhnill from Patrick Henry. My cries of “aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!” as he bolted out in front of me probably made the neighbors very curious….

Now, wait a minute. There is a large difference between a squirrel and a bunny. Bunnies are cute and running over a bunny is very sad. Squirrels are vermin and running over a squirrel is only sad if it hurts you or your bike. I tried to teach my daughters the proper name for them – tree rats – but “society” insisted on forcing its views on them. They’ve settled on “squirrat”, which seems like a good compromise.

We could always change the name bunny to cuterat.

It’s unclear bunnies have any positive attributes besides being cute (although they might be tasty).

They may not have positive attributes, but the default setting is “if it’s alive, try not to kill it”. It takes negative attributes to override that setting.

More like vermin prejudices; it’s not clear to me that either squirrels or rabbits are more virtuous than the other.

Have you ever seen a squirrel?
